Book The Decline of the French Pass Simple

Download or read book The Decline of the French Pass Simple written by Emmanuelle Labeau and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disappearance of the French simple past has been hotly debated since the early 20th century. This volume offers an overview of its fortunes since French emerged as a language, provides a description of its distinctive features, and discusses the potential impact of its supposed demise on the whole French verb system. These assumptions are tested against a large corpus of contemporary texts. The study concludes that, despite the erosion of its meaning and its increasingly infrequent use, the simple past tense is still used by native speakers in various contexts, and no single substitute has yet emerged. Nevertheless, the simple past may be evolving into a stylistic marker, making it fertile ground for future cross-linguistic studies.

This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Linguistics of History

Download or read book Linguistics of History written by Harris Roy Harris and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The task of the historian would be impossible without verbal resources for dating and describing past events. Historians from Herodotus onwards traditionally relied uncritically on their own native languages (including Greek, Latin and English) to provide all they needed. In so doing, they also took over a traditional Western view of the relationship between language, the world and the passage of time. This determined for them the rational limits of historical knowledge. Their 'histories' could not go beyond these limits without straying into the realms of myth or imagination. Their philosophy of history was circumscribed by their (often unstated) philosophy of language. This book is the first comprehensive attempt to trace the relationship between Western philosophy of history and Western philosophy of language. It spans the whole development of education from the ancient Greeks down to the present day. It examines the impact on history of modern movements, including structuralist and postmodern approaches, as well as the recent advent of television history.Features:*The first comprehensive attempt to relate Western philosophy of history to Western philosophy of language*The author is a leading authority on linguistics and the philosophy of language*The book is written in an accessible style for all levels of reader.

Book Evaluation of Translation Technology

Download or read book Evaluation of Translation Technology written by Walter Daelemans and published by ASP / VUBPRESS / UPA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of scholarly articles asks the question How useful is translation technology? Pointing to the need for a widely used and reliable way to test the efficiency of language translation programs, the presenters show that commercial tools such as translation memories and translation workbenches are popular, and their developers find them useful in terms of productivity, consistency, or quality. However, these claims are rarely proven using objective comparative studies, and this group describes several new statistical approaches to more rigorous evaluation methods. -- Product Description.
