Book excerpt: Les coopératives d'habitation logent 90 000 ménages au Canada. Ces logements sont la propriété de 2 100 coopératives. Au Québec, on retrouve approximativement 1 100 coopératives et celles-ci regroupent 23 000 membres. Les coopératives d'habitation au Québec sont plus petites que dans le reste du Canada à l'exception de celles des provinces atlantiques. Elles comptent beaucoup de projets "achat-rénovation" et s'appuient dans la très grande majorité des cas sur une gestion entièrement bénévole. Si le projet coopératif constitue dans une large mesure une réussite, il connaît aussi ses échecs. Certaines coopératives d'habitation vivent des situations de crise. Bien que, la très grande majorité de ces coopératives s'en sortent et retrouvent un équilibre financier et associatif, certaines autres connaissent des crises qui perdurent et compromettent leur existence. Ces crises sont habituellement tributaires de plusieurs facteurs dont les problèmes liés à l'engagement des projets, aux finances, aux bâtiments et à la vie associative et communautaire. Cette recherche vise donc à comprendre l'origine de ces crises, les conditions d'émergence et les solutions pouvant être mises en place pour les résoudre et si possible les prévenir.
