Book The Hashishin Club

Download or read book The Hashishin Club written by Theophile Gautier and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2013-03-31 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Club des Hashischins ("Club of the Hashish-Eaters”), was a Parisian literary group dedicated to the exploration of drug-induced altered states of consciousness, principally through the use of hashish, a concentrated form of cannabis resin. Notable members of the club, which was active from 1844 to 1849, included Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Baudelaire, Gerard de Nerval, Honoré de Balzac, and Théophile Gautier, all dedicated to experimenting with drugs and recording drug-induced visions. Whilst Baudelaire notably produced his treatise "The Poem Of Hashish” based on his experiences at the club, the most notable record of the group's activities and experiences under the influence of hashish remains Gautier's "Le Club des Hachichin”, first published in the Revue des Deux Mondes in February 1846. This text also includes a section on the original hashishin, the assassins who served the Old Man of the Mountain, a figure later identified by William S. Burroughs as Hassan i Sabbah. Transmutation and insanity loom over Gautier as he explores a hypnagogic inner world of monstrous distortions and shadows, on a trip into the revelries of Walpurgisnacht. The result is an enduring masterpiece of drug literature.

Book excerpt: A reflection on our changing relationship with the sea, imagined by artists such as Jeff Koons and Alison Katz It goes without saying that our relationship to the natural world, especially the sea and its enigmatic and unfathomable contents, is complex and fraught. Far from a wholesale critical condemnation of anthropocentrism, The Imaginary Sea seeks to present a balanced, multifaceted perspective of our evolving relationship with the natural world. It operates, if not in different temporalities, then in different imaginations, compiling work inspired by the sea from artists such as Jeff Koons, Miquel Barceló and Alison Katz, working across a wide range of mediums. This publication, released alongside the eponymous exhibition at the Fondation Carmignac, considers not only how artists are reevaluating our relationship with nature, but also how nature, particularly the sea, sparks our imagination. Akin to the emotional range of a Shakespearian comedy or tragedy, The Imaginary Sea intends to evoke joy, mystery, wonder and melancholy, as well as loss.

Book Indigenous Heritage and Intellectual Property

Download or read book Indigenous Heritage and Intellectual Property written by Silke von Lewinski and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For indigenous cultures, property is an alien concept. Yet the market-driven industries of the developed world do not hesitate to exploit indigenous raw materials, from melodies to plants, using intellectual property law to justify their behaviour. Existing intellectual property law, for the most part, allows industries to use indigenous knowledge and resources without asking for consent and without sharing the benefits of such exploitation with the indigenous people themselves. It should surprise nobody that indigenous people object. Recognizing that the commercial exploitation of indigenous knowledge and resources takes place in the midst of a genuine and significant clash of cultures, the eight contributors to this important book explore ways in which intellectual property law can expand to accommodate the interests of indigenous people to their traditional knowledge, genetic resources, indigenous names and designations, and folklore. In so doing they touch upon such fundamental issues and concepts as the following: collective rights to the living heritage; relevant human rights norms; benefit-sharing in biological resources; farmers rights; the practical needs of documentation, assistance, and advice; the role of customary law; bioprospecting and biopiracy; and public domain. As a starting point toward mutual understanding and a common basis for communication between Western-style industries and indigenous communities, Indigenous Heritage and Intellectual Property is of immeasurable value. It offers not only an in-depth evaluation of the current legal situation under national, regional and international law including analyses of the Convention on Biological Diversity and other international instruments, as well as initiatives of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and other international bodies but also probes numerous further possibilities. While no one concerned with indigenous culture or environmental issues can afford to ignore it, this book is also of special significance to practitioners and policymakers in intellectual property law in relation to indigenous heritage. This book, here in its second edition, presents the most recent state of knowledge in the field.
