Book Prostitutes and Their Rescuers

Download or read book Prostitutes and Their Rescuers written by Lilian Mathieu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-02-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few sociological subjects excite so much passion – and fantasies – as prostitution. Relying on a thirty year-long study of the French case, Lilian Mathieu offers an objective and comprehensive account of prostitution realities, first by analyzing the sex market as a social world with its own rules, hierarchies, and vulnerabilities, but also by stressing how prostitutes’ practice and living conditions are framed and shaped by moral campaigns, public controversies, and state policies. By doing so, the book offers a new understanding of how the “deviant” and “normal” worlds interact and transform sexual norms. Prostitutes and Their Rescuers. Sociological dynamics and public controversies in French prostitution is now available in paperback for individual customers.

Book Lettres Lucilius

Download or read book Nicolas Edme R tif de la Bretonne Ing nue Saxancour written by Mary S. Trouille and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in Paris in the 1780s, Rétif de la Bretonne's Ingénue Saxancour is a thinly veiled account of his daughter's disastrous marriage to an abusive husband. From the time of her marriage in January, 1780, until she left her husband in July, 1785, Agnès Rétif suffered continually from severe physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Published in 1789, Rétif's novel scandalized the public with its graphic descriptions of his son-in-law's sexual perversity and brutal violence. Rétif's novel remains shocking more than two centuries later and continues to raise disturbing questions about power relations within abusive relationships. Perhaps most disturbing of all are the accusations leveled against Rétif himself concerning his motives for writing and publishing this account: Was he, as some charged, a shameless exhibitionist willing to reveal his family's darkest secrets merely to attract attention and broaden his readership? Was he an unscrupulous opportunist willing to capitalize on his daughter's misfortunes and risk her reputation simply to pay his debts? Or was he, as he himself claimed, trying to warn young women about the dangers of marrying men of dubious backgrounds against their parents' wishes? Rétif was all this and more: a reform-minded pioneer far in advance of his time with his graphic portrayal of spousal abuse, his call for greater public awareness of this perennial problem, and his crusade for liberal divorce laws that would allow women to escape from abusive relationships and to remarry. This, in fact, is what Agnès Rétif was able to do after passage of the divorce law passed by France's revolutionary government in 1792.

Book excerpt: For almost a decade, Matt Kozar had been coasting as a general reporter with the New York Tribune ... longing but never managing to break the big story ... until now. While on a routine assignment in Central Park, the launch of Feed the Starving – a glitzy, high-powered campaign to raise awareness of a devastating famine plaguing the Horn of Africa, Kozar soon becomes entangled in a web of incredible greed and corruption, and a devious plot to defraud the U.S. government of hundreds of millions of dollars in food aid destined for millions of starving children, women and men. In this fast-paced, hard-hitting political thriller, Kozar flies to Eritrea where he witnesses blatant corruption in the distribution of international food aid. But there is something far more sinister going on, and as he continues to dig, he quickly finds himself pitted against a rogue’s gallery of extremely dangerous characters: a powerful evangelical minister, a repugnant US Republican senator, the unscrupulous head of the UN International Food Fund and a pair of ruthless Russian oligarchs – who will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep their illegal enterprise from being exposed.

Book Sex Slaves and Discourse Masters

Download or read book Sex Slaves and Discourse Masters written by Doctor Jo Doezema and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the international community so concerned with the fate of prostitutes abroad? And why does the story of trafficking sound so familiar? In this pioneering new book, Jo Doezema argues that the current concern with trafficking in women is a modern manifestation of the myth of white slavery. Combining historical analysis with contemporary investigation, this book sheds light on the current preoccupations with trafficking in women. It examines in detail sex worker reactions to the myth of trafficking, questions the current feminist preoccupation with the 'suffering female body' and argues that feminism needs to move towards the creation of new myths. The analysis in this book is controversial but crucial, an alternative to the current panic discourses around trafficking in women. An essential read for anyone who is concerned with the increased movement of women internationally and the attempts of international and national governments to regulate this flow.
