Book Chr tien de Troyes

Download or read book Chr tien de Troyes written by Douglas Kelly and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supplement to the 1976 original bibliography reflects the expanding scope of modern Chrétien studies, including items from around the world, with the assistance of an international team of scholars. The Supplement builds on and completes the Chrétien de Troyes Bibliography first published in 1976. Together the two volumes constitute the fullest and most complete bibliographical source now available on this major medieval author. Chrétien de Troyes bequeathed a corpus of highly original and widely influential Arthurian romances. Indeed, his direct or indirect influence continued throughout the middle ages and beyond into modern times. The Bibliographypermits students of medieval romance to quickly identify the areas in which Chrétien scholarship has been active. Items are listed under twenty-two topics, with numerous sub-sections under each topic, and cross-references for items that treat more than one of the topics. The broad geographic and linguistic scope of modern Chrétien studies is evident in items not only from western Europe and North America, but also from the growing body of medieval scholarship in eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and Australasia. To ensure accuracy and completeness, the editor has been assisted by scholars competent in the many languages in which Chrétien studies are now published, most notably in Japanese, Welsh, Rumanian, Hungarian and Polish, as well as by other scholars and librarians who generously provided assistance and information in finding items difficult to access.

Book The Romance of Tristran by Beroul and Beroul II

Download or read book The Romance of Tristran by Beroul and Beroul II written by Barbara N. Sargent-Baur and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the late-twelfth century, the Old French Romance of Tristran by Beroul is one of the earliest surviving versions of the story of Tristran and Iseut. Preserved in only one manuscript, the poem records the tragic tale that became one of the most popular themes of medieval literature, in several languages. This volume is a comprehensive and up-to-date presentation of the story, including the first ever diplomatic edition of the text, replicating the exact state of the original manuscript. It also contains a new critical edition, complemented by extensive notes and a brief analytic preface. Edited by noted medievalist Barbara N. Sargent-Baur, The Romance of Tristran by Beroul and Beroul II: A Diplomatic Edition and a Critical Edition will be an essential resource for specialists interested in the study of this important text. An English translation of the Old French text appears in The Romance of Tristran by Beroul and Beroul II: Student Edition and English Translation.

Book A Companion to Mester de Clerec a Poetry

Download or read book A Companion to Mester de Clerec a Poetry written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mester de clerecía is the term traditionally used to designate the first generations of learned poetry in medieval Ibero-Romance dialects (the precursors of modern Castilian and other Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula). In its time, this poetry was anything but traditional. These long poems of structured verse reappropriate the heroic past through the retelling of legends from Classical Antiquity, saints’ lives, miracle stories, Biblical apocrypha, and other tales. At the same time, the poems recast the place of their authors, and learned characters within their stories, in the shifting dynamics of their thirteenth and fourteenth century present. Contributors are Pablo Ancos, Maria Cristina Balestrini, Fernando Baños Vallejo, Andrew M. Beresford, Olivier Biaggini, Martha M. Daas, Emily C. Francomano, Ryan Giles, Michelle M. Hamilton, Anthony John Lappin, Clara Pascual-Argente, Connie L. Scarborough, Donald W. Wood, and Carina Zubillaga.

Download or read book Experimental Histories written by Hannah Weaver and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Experimental Histories, Hannah Weaver examines the medieval practice of interpolation—inserting material from one text into another—which is often categorized as being a problematic, inauthentic phenomenon akin to forgery and pseudepigraphy. Instead, Weaver promotes interpolation as the signature form of medieval British historiography and a vehicle of historical theory, arguing that some of the most novel concepts of time in medieval historiography can be found in these altered narratives of the past. For Weaver, historiographical interpolation constitutes the traces of active experimentation with how best to write history, particularly the history of Britain. Historians in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Britain recognized the difficulty of enfolding complex events into a linear chronology and embraced innovative textual methods of creating history. Focusing on the Brut tradition but also analyzing the long history of interpolated historiography, including the Bayeux Embroidery, Experimental Histories offers a new interpretation of generic remixing in medieval writing about the past. Drawing on both manuscript studies and the new formalism, it shows that the practice of inserting materials from romance and hagiography allowed creative revisers to explore how lived events relate to passing time. By embracing interpolation, Weaver provides lively insights into the ways that time becomes history and human actors experience time.
