Book The Tower and the Well

Download or read book The Tower and the Well written by Amy Vanderlyn DeGraff and published by Summa Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 1984 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a relatively brief period of time (1690-1705), Madame D'Aulnoy created a rich and diviersified collection of fairy tales which rank second in importance only to those of Charles Perrault. Through close readings of the various tales, Professor DeGraff demonstrates how the interplay of structural forms and themes can best be understood within the framework of psychological intepretation. This study is above all a sensitive and innovative approach to an author whose writings have not yet received the critical acclaim they so justly deserve. This work is accessible to specialists and non-specialists alike and will appeal to proponents of women's studies. -- Amazon.com.

Book Narrativity Coherence and Literariness

Download or read book Narrativity Coherence and Literariness written by Eva Sabine Wagner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for the defining qualities of narrative has produced an expansive range of definitions which, largely unconnected with each other, obscure the notion of “narrativity” rather than clarifying it. The first part of this study remedies this shortcoming by developing a graded macro model of narrativity which serves three aims. Firstly, it provides a structured overview of the field of narrative elements and processes. Secondly, it facilitates the classification of narratological approaches by locating them on different stages of narrativity. Finally, it focuses attention on narrative dynamics as interpretative processes by which readers seek to produce narrative coherence. The second part of this study identifies three different narrative dynamics which characterise Laclos’s "Dangerous Connections," Kafka’s "Castle" and Toussaint’s novels. Wagner bases her analyses of these dynamics not only on the texts themselves but also on the ways in which literary scholars imbue the texts with narrative coherence. This book provides a long overdue systematisation of the jumbled field of theories of narrativity and opens new perspectives on the difficult relationship between narrative theory and interpretation.

Book Literary Slumming

Download or read book Literary Slumming written by Eliza Jane Smith and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-08-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Slumming: Slang and Class in Nineteenth-Century France applies a sociolinguistic approach to the representation of slang in French literature and dictionaries to reveal the ways in which upper-class writers, lexicographers, literary critics, and bourgeois readers participated in a sociolinguistic concept the author refers to as “literary slumming”, or the appropriation of lower-class and criminal language and culture. Through an analysis of spoken and embodied manifestations of the anti-language of slang in the works of Eugène François Vidocq, Honoré de Balzac, Eugène Sue, Victor Hugo, the Goncourt Brothers, and Émile Zola, Literary Slumming argues that the nineteenth-century French literary discourse on slang led to the emergence of this sociolinguistic phenomenon that prioritized lower-class and criminal life and culture in a way that ultimately expanded class boundaries and increased visibility and agency for minorities within the public sphere.

Book Terrible Sociability

Download or read book Terrible Sociability written by Susan Winnett and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1993-09-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the novel of manners or mondanité as a form. It examines how the customs, mores, and rules of personal intercourse allow novelists to write about precisely those aspects of human experience that are quite unmannerly. Readings of Laclos's Dangerous Liasons, Goethe's Elective Affinities, and Henry James's the Golden Bowl show how each text addresses the manners organizing society in such a way as to engage the issues that most threaten the novel of manners itself. Because manners are ostensibly conservative, these works manifest a productive tension between their conventions of representation and overt ideological concerns on the one hand and their hidden agendas on the other. Winnett not only shows how each novelist uses a particular set of formal conventions to articulate a theme he would not have been able to treat directly, but also what it means to choose manners to represent concerns that manners would seem to proscribe.

Book Jean Racine

Download or read book Jean Racine written by John Sayer and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first biography of Racine in over half a century for an English-language readership also traces the impact of Racine over three centuries in England as well as France. The plays and their reception are reviewed, using contextual approaches as part of each phase of Racine's life-story, with excerpts and quotations translated. Racine's upbringing and work as poet and historiographer are related to the France of Louis XIV, to audiences and to advancement for this 'man from nowhere', with parallels in Britain and elsewhere. Changing attitudes to Racine are traced across the centuries, across literary movements and on stage, including recent productions. The book provides insights in the specialist field of Racine studies and seventeenth-century French literature and theatre, in comparative literary studies, particularly between France and Restoration England, and to the interaction of Racine and European cultural movements to the present day.
