Book Discovering the Hidden Wisdom of The Little Prince

Download or read book Discovering the Hidden Wisdom of The Little Prince written by Pierre Lassus and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally, one of the most of the most beloved books every published—explained. The Little Prince is revered around the world. Two hundred million copies have been sold in 270 languages; it is the fourth best-selling book of all time. Part of its allure is that is seems incredibly wise but so simple it is read as a work for children. Yet its meaning is elusive, and its place amid the writings of an adventurer and war hero acclaimed for dramatic bestsellers like Night Flight and Flight to Arras is mysterious. In this elegant, carefully argued book, Pierre Lassus reexamines the story of The Little Prince against the facts of Saint-Exupéry's own extraordinary life, from his cherished but fatherless childhood in aristocratic poverty to his career as a pioneering pilot. His plane had broken down in the desert before. He had adopted a fox, when posted at the Spanish fort of Cape Juby, in southern Morocco. He had known the world of business before becoming pilot; he had also known unrequited love. Like his little protagonist's, his body was never found after his plane disappeared in World War II. He was working on his spiritual autobiography when he died, and there too, Lassus finds resonances and keys to the understated spirituality of his last great book.

Book Saturn s Moons

Download or read book Saturn s Moons written by Jo Catling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German novelist, poet and critic W. G. Sebald (1944-2001) has in recent years attracted a phenomenal international following for his evocative prose works such as Die Ausgewanderten (The Emigrants), Die Ringe des Saturn (The Rings of Saturn) and Austerlitz, spellbinding elegiac narratives which, through their deliberate blurring of genre boundaries and provocative use of photography, explore questions of Heimat and exile, memory and loss, history and natural history, art and nature. Saturn's Moons: a W. G. Sebald Handbook brings together in one volume a wealth of new critical and visual material on Sebald's life and works, covering the many facets and phases of his literary and academic careers -- as teacher, as scholar and critic, as colleague and as collaborator on translation. Lavishly illustrated, the Handbook also contains a number of rediscovered short pieces by W. G. Sebald, hitherto unpublished interviews, a catalogue of his library, and selected poems and tributes, as well as extensive primary and secondary bibliographies, details of audiovisual material and interviews, and a chronology of life and works. Drawing on a range of original sources from Sebald's Nachlass - the most important part of which is now held in the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach - Saturn's Moons6g will be an invaluable sourcebook for future Sebald studies in English and German alike, complementing and augmenting recent critical works on subjects such as history, memory, modernity, reader response and the visual. The contributors include Mark Anderson, Anthea Bell, Ulrich von Buelow, Jo Catling, Michael Hulse, Florian Radvan, Uwe Schuette, Clive Scott, Richard Sheppard, Gordon Turner, Stephen Watts and Luke Williams. Book This Is Not A Leadership Book

Download or read book This Is Not A Leadership Book written by Emmanuel Gobillot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-26 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part leadership book, part business book and 100% true, this is like hearing a wise, honest, and humorous mentor finally tell you about the world of business as it is and how to find your place in it. Many leadership books are either shallow (focusing on only one element of leadership), narrow (examining leadership out of context), or biased (selling an idealised model). This book seeks simplicity without being simplistic and focuses on the reader in their context rather than describing other people’s leadership in theirs. It sets out 20 rules for success that draw on Emmanuel Gobillot’s 20 years of experience advising high- performing leaders. Each rule is presented in an engaging, instantly recognisable true story that helps current and aspiring leaders to look differently at their own situation. Best described as a leadership development programme, this book takes you on a fast-paced, three-step journey from what it takes to be a leader, to why you can be one, via how to succeed.

Download or read book Chaos Cosmos and Saint Exup ry s Pilot Hero written by John R. Harris and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Harris attempts to address Saint-Exupery's unique qualities with full regard for his evasion of categories. Harris contends that Saint-Exupery is, in fact, naively and perhaps sublimely simple. The apparent complexity in his works results from our own underestimation of his determination to fuse the aesthetic and the moral.

Book What Voltaire Tries to Tell Us

Download or read book What Voltaire Tries to Tell Us written by Denise Bonhomme and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this daring study is the veiled message concealed in the trilogy consisting of Zadig, Candide and L’Ingénu. Micromégas, Le Mondain and the Poem on the Disaster of Lisbon are also examined esoterically. The Voltairian “contraband” which is the core of those writings was too explosive for overt publication during the lifetime of the author. More dangerous to reveal than his well-known, subversive socio-political views was the spiritual source of his militancy. Accordingly, his veiled message was meant for the general reading public of the future. But it never went unnoticed by other literary “smugglers.” Hints and clues to the presence of hidden material are many. Zadig, for instance, is described by its author as “a story that says more than it seems to say,” a massive understatement. Voltaire is “only” one star in a spectacular constellation of similarly inspired writers. Among such luminaries are Rabelais, Vigny, Ibsen, Proust, Sinclair Lewis and Saint-Exupéry. In the words of Marcel Proust, “the great writers have never done but one work…” Leads are given to encourage the esoteric exploration of the vast domain of esoteric literature. An esoteric Glossary is included in this book.

Book A History of Silence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alain Corbin
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2018-05-29
  • ISBN : 1509517391
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book A History of Silence written by Alain Corbin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silence is not simply the absence of noise. It is within us, in the inner citadel that great writers, thinkers, scholars and people of faith have cultivated over the centuries. It characterizes our most intimate and sacred spaces, from private bedrooms to grand cathedrals – those vast reservoirs of silence. Philosophers and novelists have long sought solitude and inspiration in mountains and forests. Yet despite the centrality of silence to some of our most intense experiences, the transformations of the twentieth century have gradually diminished its value. Today, raucous urban spaces and a continual bombardment from different media pressure us into constant activity. We are losing a sense of our inner selves, a process that is changing the very nature of the individual. This book rediscovers the wonder of silence and, with this, a richer experience of life. With his predilection for the elusive, Corbin calls us to listen to another history.

Book The Accidental Anthropologist

Download or read book The Accidental Anthropologist written by Michael Jackson and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journeys through the Congo, Sierra Leone and Outback Australia in an inventive memoir by a Commonwealth Poetry Prize-winning ethnographer. The Accidental Anthropologist is a fascinating, impeccably written memoir, or more accurately, a series of fragments. Compelling and absorbing as well as intense and insightful, Jackson writes a far from classically autobiographical text. There is nothing predictable about the mode or incidents he has chosen to write about: this is literary memoir at its best and most inventive. Jackson has a fascination with the concept of personal metamorphosis, the idea that a life can be dismantled and reassembled in a different country and set of relationships. And throughout the story the author makes a pretty good fist of living the theory. Jackson’s experiences begin with his earnest portrayal of young adulthood in Wellington where he associates on the fringes with many of the literary figures of the early 1960s: Bob Lowry, Fleur Adcock, James K. Baxter, R.A.K. Mason and the artist McCahon. Jackson finds himself homeless in London where he’s drawn to help the poor and eventually finds his way to Cambridge, where he stumbles upon anthropology. His subsequent ethnographic fieldwork takes him to the Congo, Sierra Leone, and outback Australia. Jackson makes it clear that our lives are barely our own, they belong as much to the people, the landscapes, the influences of thought and ideology that absorb us. He excells at the intensely personal and captivates with this masterful work. The Accidental Anthropologist is a challenging and magnificent memoir; much of it is spellbinding, astute and disquieting.

Book Jean Cras Polymath of Music and Letters

Download or read book Jean Cras Polymath of Music and Letters written by Paul-André Bempéchat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Cras (1879-1932) was a remarkable man by anyone's measure. Twice a decorated hero of the Great War, this Rear-Admiral of the French navy, scientist, inventor and moral philosopher, was also a highly esteemed composer during his lifetime, enjoying the same stature and celebrity as Faur?Debussy and Ravel. Since his death, however, both Cras and his music have been almost completely overlooked. In this, the first critical biography of Cras, Paul-Andre Bempechat situates Henri Duparc's proteg?s a missing link between the French post-Romantic generation of composers and the Impressionists. The book explores, both historically and analytically, the methodology by which Cras evolved his eclectic brand of Impressionism, striking the delicate balance between Celtic folk idioms and exoticisms inspired by his travels. Cras' creative legacy extends beyond the world of music to the world of science. His five patented inventions include the navigational gyrocompass, which bears his name, still in use to this day by the French navy, coast guard and boating afficionados. Bempechat draws special attention to the humanist Jean Cras and his distinguished military career - he is credited with saving the Serbian army from extinction - drawing on primary source material such as family correspondence and wartime diaries to reaffirm this composer as a true Renaissance man of the twentieth century.
