Download or read book Vie et mort du couple en Nouvelle France written by Josette Brun and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book La Nouvelle France

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter N. Moogk
  • Publisher : MSU Press
  • Release : 2000-04-30
  • ISBN : 0870135287
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book La Nouvelle France written by Peter N. Moogk and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2000-04-30 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On one level, Peter Moogk's latest book, La Nouvelle France: The Making of French Canada—A Cultural History, is a candid exploration of the troubled historical relationship that exists between the inhabitants of French- and English- speaking Canada. At the same time, it is a long- overdue study of the colonial social institutions, values, and experiences that shaped modern French Canada. Moogk draws on a rich body of evidence—literature; statistical studies; government, legal, and private documents in France, Britain, and North America— and traces the roots of the Anglo-French cultural struggle to the seventeenth century. In so doing, he discovered a New France vastly different from the one portrayed in popular mythology. French relations with Native Peoples, for instance, were strained. The colony of New France was really no single entity, but rather a chain of loosely aligned outposts stretching from Newfoundland in the east to the Illinois Country in the west. Moogk also found that many early immigrants to New France were reluctant exiles from their homeland and that a high percentage returned to Europe. Those who stayed, the Acadians and Canadians, were politically conservative and retained Old Régime values: feudal social hierarchies remained strong; one's individualism tended to be familial, not personal; Roman Catholicism molded attitudes and was as important as language in defining Acadian and Canadian identities. It was, Moogk concludes, the pre-French Revolution Bourbon monarchy and its institutions that shaped modern French Canada, in particular the Province of Quebec, and set its people apart from the rest of the nation.

This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Conversation and Storytelling in Fifteenth and Sixteenth century French Nouvelles

Download or read book Conversation and Storytelling in Fifteenth and Sixteenth century French Nouvelles written by Kathleen Loysen and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the role of represented speech in four short story collections from fifteenth- and sixteenth-century France: the anonymous Evangiles des quenouilles; Martial d'Auvergne's Arrêts d'Amour; Marguerite de Navarre's Heptaméron; and Noël Du Fail's Propos rustiques. As a study of the narrative staging of the acts of storytelling and conversing, it raises issues of orality, aurality, and literacy, as well as of the processes of textual production, transmission, and reception. In addition, the conversational frame of these short story collections deliberately sets up questions about the accessibility and reliability of truth. While these collections claim to enter upon the path toward universal truth, the difficulty of such an enterprise is revealed through their very narrative structure, where the polyphony of opposing voices and divergent opinions is engaged by the very acts of conversation and storytelling themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There Are No Slaves in France examines the paradoxical emergence of political antislavery and institutional racism in the century prior to the French Revolution. Based on various archival sources, this work will be of interest not only to historians of slavery and France, but to scholars interested in the emergence of modern culture in the Atlantic world.

Book Economic Development in Early Modern France

Download or read book Economic Development in Early Modern France written by Jeff Horn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privilege has long been understood as the constitutional basis of Ancien Régime France, legalizing the provision of a variety of rights, powers and exemptions to some, whilst denying them to others. In this fascinating new study however, Jeff Horn reveals that Bourbon officials utilized privilege as an instrument of economic development, freeing some sectors of the economy from pre-existing privileges and regulations, while protecting others. He explores both government policies and the innovations of entrepreneurs, workers, inventors and customers to uncover the lived experience of economic development from the Fronde to the Restoration. He shows how, influenced by Enlightenment thought, the regime increasingly resorted to concepts of liberty to defend privilege as a policy tool. The book offers important new insights into debates about the impact of privilege on early industrialization, comparative economic development and the outbreak of the French Revolution.
