Download or read book ducation violences conflits et perspectives de paix en Afrique subsaharienne written by and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2009 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Social Stakes of Privatizations in Cameroon written by Hermann-Habib Kibangou and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devaluation of the CFA franc and the early 90s mark the second wave of privatizations recommended by international financial institutions. The transition from a system of “social goals” to that of private capital becomes more and more evident. From the peoples’ point of view, the ongoing reforms imposed from outside often do not take into account the specific situation of each country. Therefore, the question posed by privatization is: how can a government conciliate the need to privatize a public company with that of the consideration of the claims of the people? This is the fundamental question behind this thinking. We chose as example the case of the Cameroon Development Corporation (Cdc). This is justified by the fact that, as announced more than ten years earlier, privatization drags on, though it (Cdc) appears third on the list of fifteen public companies and parastatals to be privatized. After choosing to sell its four branches separately (banana, tea, rubber, palm oil), the Cameroonian government succeeded in October 2002 to sell the tea industry to the South African group Brobon Finex, which created the Cameroon Tea Estates (Cte). This is, to date, the only branch privatized. With its 13,000 employees, the first agro-industrial company in Cameroon, also first employer after the State, is a major stake. Also, the planned dismantling raises much concern. Our intention is to see how far and to what extent African states in general, and the Cameroonian State in particular, may accept the collaboration with representatives of the civil society in the game and the stakes of privatization policies, in the search for a social compromise.

Book excerpt: This book explores the new debates on Basque sovereignty and statehood that have emerged in the post-violence Basque political scenario. It deciphers how sovereignty is understood or imagined by a revitalized civil society after the unilateral cessation of operations by ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom). The contributors to this book investigate the new political field developing in the nexus between conventional party politics, established socio-cultural and linguistic organizations, creative civil society initiatives, and innovative activism. This book is for graduate students, scholars and professionals in political science, social anthropology, European studies, political philosophy, transnational studies, sociology, political geography, and global studies. It will also be of interest to academic specialists in Basque studies, specialists working on sovereignty, nationalism and globalization, and professionals in governance, international relations, foreign affairs, European politics and diplomacy.

Download or read book Mining Mobility and Social Change in the Global South written by Gerardo Castillo Guzmán and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on how, why, under what conditions, and with what effects people move across space in relation to mining, asking how a focus on spatial mobility can aid scholars and policymakers in understanding the complex relation between mining and social change. This collection centers the concept of mobility to address the diversity of mining-related population movements as well as the agency of people engaged in these movements. This volume opens by introducing both the historical context and conceptual tools for analyzing the mining-mobility nexus, followed by case study chapters focusing on three regions with significant histories of mineral extraction and where mining currently plays an important role in socio-economic life: the Andes, Central and West Africa, and Melanesia. Written by authors with expertise in diverse fields, including anthropology, development studies, geography, and history, case study chapters address areas of both large- and smallscale mining. They explore the historical-geographical factors shaping mining-related mobilities, the meanings people attach to these movements, and the relations between people’s mobility practices and the flows of other things put in motion by mining, including capital, ideas, technologies, and toxic contamination. The result is an important volume that provides fresh insights into the social geographies and spatial politics of extraction. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of mining and the extractive industries, spatial politics and geography, mobility and migration, development, and the social and environmental dimensions of natural resources more generally.

Download or read book Concrete City written by Armelle Choplin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CONCRETE CITY “Armelle Choplin’s Concrete City weaves a novel and engaging analysis of urbanization by tracing the journeys of cement and people making urban life in West Africa. From post-independence high modernist ambitions to building the opportunities to make a living, the emerging transnational corridor along the West African coast provides a starting point for insights which will expand and inform understanding of both established and newly emerging urbanization processes in many different contexts.” —Jennifer Robinson, Professor of Geography, University College of London, UK “In this very innovative and superbly illustrated book, Armelle Choplin makes cement vibrant with affect, politics, economic interests and cultural meanings. She takes us to a fascinating journey along the West African urban corridor following the social life of concrete and showing how this material shapes contemporary urbanization and everyday life.” —Ola Söderström, Professor of Geography, University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland Concrete City: Material Flows and Urbanization in West Africa delivers a theoretically informed, ethnographic exploration of the African urban world through the life of concrete. Emblematic of frenetic urban and capitalistic development, this material is pervasive, shaping contemporary urban landscapes and societies and their links to the global world. It stands and circulates at the heart of major financial investments, political forces and environmental debates. At the same time, it epitomises values of modernity and success, redefining social practices, forms of dwelling and living, and popular imaginaries. The book invites the reader to follow bags of cement from production plant to construction site, along the 1000-kilometre urban corridor that links Abidjan to Accra, Lomé, Cotonou and Lagos, combining the perspectives of cement tycoons, entrepreneurs and political stakeholders, but also of ordinary men and women who plan, build and dream of the Concrete City. With this innovative exploration of urban life through concrete, Armelle Choplin delivers a fascinating journey into and reflection on the sustainability of our urban futures.
