Ce livre se propose d'examiner le phénomène d'industrialisation dans les pays du tiers-monde en traitant plus particulièrement des NPI. Il ne s'agit pas d'une série de monographies sur différents pays, mais d'une étude exhaustive du concept d'industrialisation, de sa problématique et de ses liens avec le développement économique, appuyée sur des exemples significatifs. Pour ce faire, une première partie consacrée aux faits présente les différentes phases de l'industralisation dans le monde depuis la révolution industrielle jusqu'aux évolutions actuelles, ainsi qu'une analyse du phénomène NPI et de la place du tiers-monde dans l'industrie et le commerce mondial de produits manufacturés. Puis sont passées en revue les théories de l'industrialisation : les visions classiques et néoclassiques, et les théories qui proposent une alternative à l'optique traditionnelle, qu'elles soient dépendantistes, néomarxistes, radicales, structuralistes ou institutionnalistes. La troisième partie s'attache aux stratégies, aux politiques d'industrialisation suivies dans le tiers-monde et aux résultats obtenus. Ainsi apparaissent le poids respectif de l'Etat et du marché dans le dosage des politiques économiques, et les différentes options vis-à-vis du commerce extérieur. Enfin des cas, illustrant les performances comparées de l'Asie orientale et de l'Amérique latine, et la situation caractéristique de l'industrie automobile, mettent en lumière les causes culturelles et institutionnelles du développement rapide de certains pays et les stratégies qui ont permis d'obtenir les meilleurs résultats tant économiques que sociaux.
