Book The Letter and the Cosmos

Download or read book The Letter and the Cosmos written by Laurence de Looze and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From our first ABCs to the Book of Revelation’s statement that Jesus is “the Alpha and Omega,” we see the world through our letters. More than just a way of writing, the alphabet is a powerful concept that has shaped Western civilization and our daily lives. In The Letter and the Cosmos, Laurence de Looze probes that influence, showing how the alphabet has served as a lens through which we conceptualize the world and how the world, and sometimes the whole cosmos, has been perceived as a kind of alphabet itself. Beginning with the ancient Greeks, he traces the use of alphabetic letters and their significance from Plato to postmodernism, offering a fascinating tour through Western history. A sharp and entertaining examination of how languages, letterforms, orthography, and writing tools have reflected our hidden obsession with the alphabet, The Letter and the Cosmos is illustrated with copious examples of the visual and linguistic phenomena which de Looze describes. Read it, and you’ll never look at the alphabet the same way again.

Book Cosmos and Image in the Renaissance

Download or read book Cosmos and Image in the Renaissance written by Kathryn Banks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance images could be real as well as linguistic. Human beings were often believed to be an image of the cosmos, and the sun an image of God. Kathryn Banks explores the implications of this for poetic language and argues that linguistic images were a powerful tool for rethinking cosmic conceptions. She reassesses the role of natural-philosophical poetry in France, focusing upon its most well-known and widely-read exponent, Guillaume de Saluste Du Bartas.Through a sustained analysis of Maurice Sceve's Delie , Banks also rethinks love lyric's oft-noted use of the beloved as image of the poet. Cosmos and Image makes an original contribution to our understanding of Renaissance thinking about the cosmic, the human, and the divine. It also proposes a mode of reading other Renaissance texts, and reflects at length upon the relation of 'literature' to history, to the history of science, and to political turmoil.

Book Comment Percer Les Secrets Enigmes Et Mysteres de L Ancienne Egypte Et D Autres Anciennes Civilisations

Download or read book Comment Percer Les Secrets Enigmes Et Mysteres de L Ancienne Egypte Et D Autres Anciennes Civilisations written by Anna Mancini and published by BUENOS BOOKS AMERICA LLC. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Dr. Anna Mancini

Book The Anchor Anthology of French Poetry

Download or read book The Anchor Anthology of French Poetry written by Angel Flores and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2000-04-18 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1958, this collection introduced an indispensable corpus of western poetry to countless American students, Francophiles, and would-be poets, among them Patti Smith, whose Introduction to this edition testifies to its epochal impact on her own career. The poetic and cultural tradition forged by the symbolist poets featured herein -- Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Apollinaire, and others -- reverberated throughout the avant garde and countercultures of the twentieth century. Surrealism, modernism, abstract impressionism, and the Beat movement all find their roots in the examples of these poets and their theories of art. With translations by Richmond Lattimore, W.S. Merwin, Richard Wilbur, and Louise Varese, this rediscovered gem is sure to inspire a new generation.

Book Living Well with Pessimism in Nineteenth Century France

Download or read book Living Well with Pessimism in Nineteenth Century France written by Joseph Acquisto and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the emergence of modern pessimism in nineteenth-century France and examines its aesthetic, epistemological, ethical, and political implications. It explores how, since pessimism as a worldview is not empirically verifiable, writers on pessimism shift the discussion to verisimilitude, opening up rich territory for cross-fertilization between philosophy and literature. The book traces debates on pessimism in the nineteenth century among French nonfiction writers who either lauded its promotion of compassion or condemned it for being a sick and unliveable attempt at renunciation. It then examines the way novelists and poets take up and transform these questions by portraying characters in lived situations that serve as testing grounds for the merits or limitations of pessimism. The debate on pessimism that emerged in the nineteenth century is still very much with us, and this book offers an interhistorical argument for embracing pessimism as a way of living well in the world, aesthetically, ethically, and politically.

Book The Cosmos and the Creative Imagination

Download or read book The Cosmos and the Creative Imagination written by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book respond to Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka’s recent call to explore the relationship between the evolution of the universe and the process of self-individuation in the ontopoietic unfolding of life. The essays approach the sensory manifold in a number of ways. They show that theories of modern science become a strategy for the phenomenological study of works of art, and vice versa. Works of phenomenology and of the arts examine how individual spontaneity connects with the design(s) of the logos – of the whole and of the particulars – while the design(s) rest not on some human concept, but on life itself. Life’s pliable matrices allow us to consider the expansiveness of contemporary science, and to help create a contemporary phenomenological sense of cosmos.
