Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the eight-month wave of mutinies that struck the French infantry and navy in 1919. Based on official records and the testimony of dozens of participants, it is the first study to try to understand the world of the mutineers. Examining their words for the traces of sensory perceptions, emotions and thought processes, it reveals that the conventional understanding of the mutinies as the result of simple war-weariness and low morale is inadequate. In fact, an emotional gulf separated officers and the ranks, who simply did not speak the same language. The revolt entailed emotional sequences ending in a deep ambivalence and sense of despair or regret. Taking this into account, the book considers how mutineer memories persisted after the events in the face of official censorship, repression and the French Communist Party’s co-option of the mutiny.

Book The Holy Portolano Le Portulan sacr

Download or read book The Holy Portolano Le Portulan sacr written by Michele Bacci and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Naval Mutinies of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Naval Mutinies of the Twentieth Century written by Christopher Bell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a set of scholarly, readable and up-to-date essays covering the most significant naval mutinies of the 20th century, including Russia (1905), Brazil (1910), Austria (1918), Germany (1918), France (1918-19), Great Britain (1931), Chile (1931), the United States (1944), India (1946), China (1949), Australia, and Canada (1949). Each chapter addresses the causes of the mutiny in question, its long- and short-term repercussions, and the course of the mutiny itself. More generally, authors consider the state of the literature on their mutiny and examine significant historiographical issues connected with it, taking advantage of new research and new methodologies to provide something of value to both the specialist and non-specialist reader. The book provides fresh insights into issues such as what a mutiny is, what factors cause them, what navies are most susceptible to them, what responses lead to satisfactory or unsatisfactory conclusions, and how far-reaching their consequences tend to be.

Book Trade Commodities and Shipping in the Medieval Mediterranean

Download or read book Trade Commodities and Shipping in the Medieval Mediterranean written by David Jacoby and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth collection by David Jacoby focuses on Western economic expansion the Eastern Mediterranean during the 11th-15th centuries. He is concerned to emphasize the interconnections linking the West, Byzantium and the Levant, and to examine normative sources for commercial activity (charters, etc.) against the background of actual practice, such as reflected in notarial documents. The articles deal with the evolution of urban centres, the trade in raw materials, and at the same time questions of technology transfer and the mobility of merchants and craftsmen. Particular attention is given to the silk trade: the author argues that demographic expansion in the Byzantine world, as in the West, stimulated economic growth, and demand for silk led to the emergence of a market-driven industry in Byzantium.
