Book Geopolitical Orientations Regionalism and Security in the Indian Ocean

Download or read book Geopolitical Orientations Regionalism and Security in the Indian Ocean written by Dennis Rumley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2004, this book is the inaugural volume of the Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) and is based on a selection of papers presented at the IORG launch in Chandigarh in November 2002. The volume emphasizes the complexity and historical and contemporary geopolitical significance of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It also propagates the necessity for increased intra-regional cooperation, especially in terms of economic and environmental security, maritime boundaries, sea lane security and ocean management, in the spirit of open regionalism, in order to ensure a more secure IOR. In addition, the volume initiates an agenda for future social science policy-orientated research. The book should be of particular interest to policy-makers, business people and academics, as well as citizens of the IOR.

Book Africa in the Indian Ocean

Download or read book Africa in the Indian Ocean written by Tor Sellström and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four sovereign Indian Ocean states of Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles, the two French overseas departments of Mayotte and Reunion, as well as the British colony of BIOT (Chagos), all form part of Africa. As insular nations and territories in an increasingly globalized, militarized and largely unregulated ocean, they face particular challenges. Commonly overlooked in the fields of African and international studies, this text traces the islands’ history and explores their diverse contemporary social, political and economic trajectories. From human settlement and slavery to conflict resolution and piracy, the relations with continental Africa and the African Union feature prominently. Richly sourced, this comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to Africa’s Indian Ocean islands covers a significant lacuna.

Book The Indian Ocean as a New Political and Security Region

Download or read book The Indian Ocean as a New Political and Security Region written by Frédéric Grare and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the emergence of the Indian Ocean as security complex and a strategic space of central importance and also looks at its prospective future. As well as US-China rivalry, the India-China rivalry is now the defining factor in the Indian Ocean – irrespective of the strategic asymmetry. This new situation has opened a space for middle-powers, old and new, to intervene. The authors argue that this situation may turn into an additional source of instability and that the creation of an inclusive and comprehensive regional security architecture, as well as the strengthening of regional multilateralism, should be the priority of all stakeholders in the coming decade.

Download or read book Rainbow Colors written by Srilata Ravi and published by After the Empire: The Francophone World and Postcolonial France. This book was released on 2007 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narratives under consideration in Rainbow Colors depict Mauritius's history of competing colonial forces, describe its intricate social geography of free and forced migrations, and portray the anxieties of mixed race persons and cultures in postcolonies.Through a rigorous analysis of novels from Loys Masson's L'etoile et la clef (1945) to Ananda Devi's Moi, l'interdite (2000), this study argues that there is no single grand narrative of cultural hybridity and ethnic pluralism in Mauritius. By conceptualizing literature as the overlapping space of ethnic-cultural realities, national and transnational identities, and a poetics of alterity, Rainbow Colors explores how different literary ethno-topographies of Mauritius are produced at this intersection. This original work considers Mauritian writing in French in its own right and not as a minor literature within the Francophone tradition. Furthermore, while significant monographs on ethnicity and nation have been published on the African and Caribbean novel (in English and in French), this is the first such single-authored book-length study on Mauritian novels to date.

Book Les conomies R elles en Afrique

Download or read book Les conomies R elles en Afrique written by Georges Kobou and published by Conseil Pour Le D'Veloppement de la Recherche en Sciences Sociales en Afrique. This book was released on 2003 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which contains essays in both English and French, brings fresh perspectives to the economic studies of Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal and the Indian Ocean region. It challenges conventional economic models narrowly informed by statistical indicators, dichotomies and dualisms, which, so it argues, have tended to misrepresent and in some cases distort any all-embracing understanding of the economies of Africa. The authors reveal that extreme poverty ? which is brought about by a ferment of inequality, injustice, inefficiency and nepotism ? is the principal cause of unrest in most African countries. Economic results that only measure statistical performance do not suffice in either determining the well-being of the population, or in comparing realistically the relative wealth of different countries. The book calls for greater urgency to develop new perspectives on African economies that have regard for unorthodox frameworks of analysis.
