Ils soulignaient le rôle des "petits", des "sans importance", des "en bas du bas" dans l'invention de formes originales de l'Etat, alors même que prévalaient au sud du Sahara des situations autoritaires. Mais ils s'interdisaient aussi de postuler l'existence d'une "culture populaire", en reprenant à leur compte les critiques formulées à l'encontre de cette notion. Ils proposaient pour leur part une problématique de l'énonciation du politique, seule à même de restituer l'historicité du politique dans sa complexité et son ambivalence. Leurs analyses ont marqué le renouvellement des études africaines et ont reçu une large audience bien au-delà de ces dernières. Réunies en 1992 dans un volume qui fit date mais qui était épuisé depuis plusieurs années, elles sont aujourd'hui reprises, alors que de nombreux travaux redécouvrent la portée de l'approche du "politique par le bas" et la mettent en perspective avec les subaltern studies indiennes, l'Alltagsgeschichte allemande, la microstoria italienne ou l'historiographie marxiste anglaise. Dans cette nouvelle édition augmentée, une préface inédite montre en quoi elle demeure utile de pour comprendre le monde contemporain en dehors des facilités de pensée. A condition de voir qu'elle n'a jamais prétendu être une "école", mais un simple état d'esprit, une forme d'hétérodoxie par rapport aux courants établis des sciences sociales, une expression de cynisme heuristique vis-à-vis des croyances et des convenances académiques ou politiques.

En définitive, cet essai, devenu un classique en sociologie de l'Etat, propose une lecture à la fois provocante et nuancée de ce qu'il est convenu de nommer le " développement ". Il ouvre aussi la voie à une réflexion plus générale sur l'invention du politique dans les sociétés d'Afrique et d'Asie.

From the formation of Maroon societies in the early colonial period, to female mobilisation in authoritarian contexts, via urban youth culture, women or mineworkers in trade unionism, as well as pro- and anti- gay rights activists, the protagonists here all insist upon their rights to protest in a variety of ways. Sometimes popular protest is expressed through religion, often (and sometimes violently) by young people, exasperated by their long wait for social achievement. Electoral wars and the formation of militias reveal a geography of violence in urban areas, which, in some sectarian excesses, can be displaced to rural areas, as described in the study on Boko Haram. Despite this, the field of Youth Studies, like many others, is dominated by the knowledge economy of the Global North. To address these geo-political inequalities of knowledge, The Oxford Handbook of Global South Youth Studies offers a contribution from Southern scholars to remake Youth Studies from its current state, that universalises Northern perspectives, into a truly Global Youth Studies. Contributors from across various regions of the Global South, including from the Diaspora, Indigenous and Aboriginal communities, locate and define "the Global South", articulate the necessity of studying Southern lives to enrich, re-interpret, legitimate and offer symmetry to Youth Studies, and utilize and innovate Southern theory to do so. Eleven concepts are re-imagined and re-presented throughout the Handbook--personhood, intersectionality, violences, de- and post-coloniality, consciousness, precarity, fluid modernities, ontological insecurity, navigational capacities, collective agency and emancipation. The outcome is a series of everyday practices such as hustling, navigating, fixing, waiting, being on standby, silence, and life-writing, that demonstrate how youth living in adversity experiment with and push back against routine and conformity, and how research may support them in these endeavors and, simultaneously, redefine the relationships between knowledge, practice and politics-what the volume editors term "epistepraxis". The Handbook concludes with a nascent charter for a Global Youth Studies of benefit to the world, that no longer excludes, assumes or elides but rather includes new possibilities for representing youth, researching amongst them, and devising policies and interventions to better serve them.
