Devant cette situation, quelle doit être l’attitude de l’école dans notre civilisation occidentale ? Pour les uns ne convient qu’une seule solution : l’assimilationnisme qui réclame, de la part des populations arrivant dans un milieu d’accueil, de s’assimiler, de se fondre au point de disparaître dans la culture d’accueil. Pour les autres, en réaction contre cette première attitude, c’est le multiculturalisme qui est de mise : chaque culture affirme ses normes propres au risque de s’enfermer dans ses propres limites. Hubert Hannoun montre dans ce livre que chacune de ces deux attitudes construit pour elle-même son propre ghetto dans lequel elle se condamne à demeurer enfermée, avec tous les risques d’appauvrissement culturel que comporte cet enfermement. Pour l’auteur, la solution possible à ce problème se situe au niveau d’une attitude authentiquement interculturaliste impliquant à la fois l’affirmation de chaque culture dans ses normes propres mais, de plus, son ouverture aux autres cultures dans la perspective de construction d’une civilisation nouvelle commune. L’école se doit d’appréhender cette vision des choses au plan de ses objectifs, de ses méthodes et de ses contenus, de même qu’à celui de la formation et du comportement de ses maîtres. C’est sur des propositions précises, en ce domaine, que débouche cet ouvrage.
