Pas seulement à destination des spécialistes, l’ouvrage s’adresse à tout lecteur soucieux de mieux comprendre le phénomène extraordinaire du langage : universellement partagé, jamais parfaitement compris, et constamment en mouvement. Après avoir été professeur d'études chinoises à Genève, Jean François Billeter a quitté l'université pour se consacrer à ses propres travaux. Dans ses études sur certains textes remarquables de Tchouang-tseu et sur l'art chinois de l'écriture, il allie la plus grande rigueur sinologique au souci constant de se faire comprendre des lecteurs non sinologues, à la fois par la clarté de l'expression et par la richesse des références à l'héritage occidental, ou simplement à l'expérience commune.
