The scriptures of the Universe The Universe as a text written with numbers, light, atoms, genes: these are the scriptures to which refers the title of this anthology of the author’s poems about science. Universe, light, matter, life, numbers, teaching, are the spaces which the poetical vision of this book spans. Here, science is seen as a dialog with the world around us. Download or read book My Name is Universe written by Toni Pou and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-06-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Name is Universe is a book of interviews with internationally renowned personalities through which some of the layers of knowledge included in the Periodic Table are revealed, recreated by Eugenia Balcells in the mural Homage to the Elements. Who would have thought that a work of art based on a scientific idea could explode like a veritable intellectual Big Bang and take us on a thrilling journey from atoms to galaxies through music, philosophy, art, cinema, chemistry, poetry, theater, dance, astrophysics, education, architecture, painting, quantum physics, religion or mathematics? My Name is Universe is a book in which science, the arts and the humanities are intertwined, appealing to the transversality and unity of knowledge. A text that cultivates an attitude of wonder at the world around us, the engine of artistic and scientific creation, and that stimulates the reader’s curiosity and creativity.

Download or read book Virtue Ethics for Women 1250 1500 written by Karen Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book locates Christine de Pizan's argument that women are virtuous members of the political community within the context of earlier discussions of the relative virtues of men and women. It is the first to explore how women were represented and addressed within medieval discussions of the virtues. It introduces readers to the little studied Speculum Dominarum (Mirror of Ladies), a mirror for a princess, compiled for Jeanne of Navarre, which circulated in the courtly milieu that nurtured Christine. Throwing new light on the way in which Medieval women understood the virtues, and were represented by others as virtuous subjects, it positions the ethical ideas of Anne of France, Laura Cereta, Marguerite of Navarre and the Dames de la Roche within an evolving discourse on the virtues that is marked by the transition from Medieval to Renaissance thought. Virtue Ethics for Women 1250-1500 will be of interest to those studying virtue ethics, the history of women's ideas and Medieval and Renaissance thought in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Yves de Vallone The Making of an Esprit Fort written by James O'Higgins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writing of the second part of this book presented a peculiar difficulty. On the one hand I had the great advantage of having found the first rough draft of the manuscript La Religion du Chretien, corrected and often recorrected. Authorship could eventually be established beyond shadow of doubt, and in the corrections one could see de Vallone changing his opinions as he wrote. On the other the sheer length of the manuscript - about 140,000 words - plus the num ber of corrections - well over 3,000, many of them lengthy - the enormous number of references in the text to the Classics, to the Scriptures and Apochrypha, to the Fathers, to Philosophers, ancient and contemporary or near contemporary to de Vallone, and to a considerable number of other contem porary authors, all of which would require a footnote (not to speak of other footnotes necessary as comments on the text itself) made the production of a critical edition a financial impossibility. Instead I decided, for the sake of scholars interested in this type of manuscript, to give a full, i. ndeed meticulous perhaps too meticulous - digest of the manuscript with a running commentary, showing the influences working on de Vallone, the intellectual atmosphere in which he lived, indicating the significance of all the major revisions and correc tions in his text and commenting on what one can only describe as his own world-theory and on his use of his authorities and of their influence upon him.
Download or read book Transforming Tales written by Miranda Griffin and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming Tales argues that the study of transformation is crucial for understanding a wide range of canonical work in medieval French literature. From the lais and Arthurian romances of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, through the Roman de la Rose and its widespread influence, to the fourteenth-century Ovide moralise and the vast prose cycles of the late Middle Ages, metamorphosis is a recurrent theme, resulting in some of the best-known and most powerful literature of the era. Transforming Tales is the first book in English to explore in detail the importance of ideas of metamorphosis in French literature from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries. This book's purpose is twofold: it traces a series of figures (the werewolf, the snake-woman, the nymph, the magician, amongst others) as they are transformed within individual texts; and it also examines the way in which the stories of transformation themselves become rewritten during the course of the Middle Ages. Griffin's approach combines close readings and comparisons of literary texts with readings informed by modern critical theories which are grounded in many of the ideas raised by medieval metamorphosis: the body, gender, identity and categories of life. Literary depictions and reworkings of transformation raise questions about medieval understandings of the differences between human and animal, man and woman, God and man, life and death--these are the questions explored in Transforming Tales.
