Diverses techniques et matériaux sont à notre disposition pour la réalisation de ces empreintes secondaires qui vont s‘adresser à des personnes de plus en plus âgées, car l'âge de l'edentation recule et il faudra alors s'adapter à ces nouvelles situations cliniques. Nous insisterons donc sur l'importance du choix du matériau et d'une technique adaptée au patient et maitrisée par le praticien dans l'optique de l'optimisation du traitement.

Dans cet ouvrage, nous cherchons à savoir si, qualitativement et économiquement, il ne serait pas plus avantageux pour le chirurgien dentiste d’effectuer ce travail au cabinet dentaire. Pour ce faire, sur un même cas clinique, nous avons effectué une étude comparative entre deux porte-empreintes individuels maxillaire et mandibulaire réalisés par le praticien en fonction des données cliniques et quatorze autres porte-empreintes confectionnés dans sept laboratoires de prothèse différents. Contre toute attente, les conclusions de cette étude révèlent des différences signifactives entre les porte-empreintes.

Elle s'articule autour d'étapes cliniques et de laboratoire bien précises, où les empreintes (primaires puis secondaires) constituent les premiers maillons. Cependant, la quintessence des nombreux matériaux à empreinte n'est bien souvent pas exploitée en raison de méthodes de traitement chronophages et surtout différées après la désinsertion : une potentielle altération des modèles en résulte donc. Les résultats présentés permettent d'affirmer que la numérisation des empreintes au cone beam est possible et offre une remarquable précision une fois leur traitement effectué, sous réserve que la technique et les matériaux utilisés soient compatibles. Ils ouvrent également la perspective d'une standardisation de cette méthode de traitement des empreintes primaires et secondaires de prothèse amovible complète.
