Book excerpt: Tracing Louis Riel’s metamorphosis from traitor to hero, Braz argues that, through his writing, Riel resists his portrayal as both a Canadian patriot and a pan-Indigenous leader. After being hanged for high treason in 1885, the Métis politician, poet, and mystic has emerged as a quintessential Canadian champion. The Riel Problem maps this representational shift by examining a series of cultural and scholarly commemorations of Riel since 1967, from a large-scale opera about his life, through the publication of his extant writings, to statues erected in his honour. Braz also probes how aspects of Riel’s life and writing can be problematic for many contemporary Métis artists, scholars, and civic leaders. Analyzing representations of Riel in light of his own writings, the author exposes both the constructedness of the Canadian nation-state and the magnitude of the current historical revisionism when dealing with Riel.

During his trial, the Métis leader gave two speeches, passionately defending the interests of the Métis in western Canada as well as his own life. The first and better known of the two speeches addresses the jury, while Riel's second speech - rarely reprinted - addresses the court following his guilty verdict. A biography of Bishop A.-A. Taché is more than the story of an individual because it is the chronicle of the Catholic Church in Quebec and the Canadian North West. It is a study of how clerical elites influenced society and its evolution and an account of an attempt to transplant and nurture and idealized agricultural society of Quebec on the prairies. As a pioneer French Canadian Oblate missionary and bishop A.-A. Taché was associated with some of the most momentous events in western Canadian history: the Red River Insurrection, French Catholic colonization, the Saskatchwan Rebellion and the school and language controversies in Manitoba and the North West Territories. Taché was an authoritarian figure and this tendency was reinforced by religious and episcopal office. In practice he was a micro manager who desired to control everything. Despite his valiant efforts his vision of a sister province of Quebec in the West failed to materialize and Quebec failed to respond to his urgent pleas for immigrants and Quebec politicians undermined his efforts by suggesting that he had betrayed his native province. Taché’s career is also a chronicle of failure and frustration but he took consolation in the fact that he had not shirked his duty nor tarnished his honour. Within this context Taché’s actions are a reminder of sacred accords concluded between English and French, Catholic and Protestant in 1867 and 1870. As an administrator Taché’s forte was in managing the material assets of his diocese. On the other hand, he lacked interpersonal skills in dealing and relating with his clergy. In the final analysis Taché will always remain an enigmatic figure.

Book excerpt: In Rhetoric, Irony, and Law in the Formation of Canadian Civil Culture, Michael Dorland and Maurice Charland examine how, over the roughly 400-year period since the encounter of First Peoples with Europeans in North America, rhetorical or discursive fields took form in politics and constitution-making, in the formation of a public sphere, and in education and language. The study looks at how these fields changed over time within the French regime, the British regime, and in Canada since 1867, and how they converged through trial and error into a Canadian civil culture. The authors establish a triangulation of fields of discourse formed by law (as a technical discourse system), rhetoric (as a public discourse system), and irony (as a means of accessing the public realm as the key pillars upon which a civil culture in Canada took form) in order to scrutinize the process of creating a civil culture. By presenting case studies ranging from the legal implications of the transition from French to English law to the continued importance of the Louis Riel case and trial, the authors provide detailed analyses of how communication practices form a common institutional culture. As scholars of communication and rhetoric, Dorland and Charland have written a challenging examination of the history of Canadian governance and the central role played by legal and other discourses in the formation of civil culture.
