Download or read book Nordic Literature of Decadence written by Pirjo Lyytikäinen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nordic Literature of Decadence fills a gap on the map of world literature and participates in a thriving area of research by extending the investigation of broadly understood fin de siècle decadence to unexplored areas of Nordic literature, which remain practically unknown to Anglophone audiences. In the Nordic countries the new Parisian movements were seen as having caused a malicious invasion, a ‘black flood’ that was spreading over the North destroying the very foundations of Nordic national cultures. Nevertheless, the appeal of this controversial movement was irresistible to discontents and innovators, even in countries where the old moral, religious and nationalist atmosphere still retained its stranglehold and modern urban, industrial and social developments lagged behind that of the metropoles breeding this new literature and art. The Nordic countries developed their own distinctive manifestations of decadence favouring allegorical and allusive forms, local rural settings and depictions of primitive nature, coupling the philosophical underpinnings of fin-de-siècle decadence with ancient Nordic mythology and rising national movements. Nordic decadence thus became a distinctive and recognizable phenomenon, which travelled back to France and other European countries, influencing the ongoing debate on decadence as it was conducted on a global scale. Nordic Literature of Decadence discusses literature from five Nordic countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Estonia and offers additional and alternative perspectives to the cosmopolitan traffic and cultural exchanges of literary decadence that have been explored so far in the English language scholarship.

Download or read book Intercultural Geopoetics in Kenneth White s Open World written by Mohammed Hashas and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work introduces Kenneth White’s geopoetics as a radical, postmodern interdisciplinary and intercultural project that reclaims the return to communication with the earth, nature, wo-man, and the self as part of a cosmic unity approach. It traces geopoetics’ beginnings, key concepts, territories and trajectories, aims, and perspectives. Geopoetics is shown here to be a cosmopolitan project for a more open and harmonious world, which buries narrow-mindedness and offers new horizons.
Download or read book Beyond Identity written by Attila Dósa and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Beyond Identity," thirteen of Scotland's best known poets reflect upon the theoretical, practical and political considerations involved in the act of writing. They furnish a unique guide to contemporary Scottish poetry, discussing a range of issues that include nationhood, education, language, religion, landscape, translation and identity. John Burnside, Robert Crawford, Douglas Dunn, Kathleen Jamie, Edwin Morgan, Kenneth White and others, together with such noted experimentalists as Frank Kuppner, Tom Leonard and Richard Price, explore questions about the relationship between social, economic and ecological realities and their poetic transformation. These interviews are set within the altered political context that followed from the re-establishment of a Scottish Parliament in 1999 and the potential of a renewed engagement with wider European culture. Attila Dosa is Senior Lecturer at the Department of English at the University of Miskolc, in northern Hungary.
Download or read book Land and Mind written by Bsaithi Omar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is both a study of the work of the Scottish writer, Kenneth White, in thought, travel writing and poetry, and an application of one of White’s main concepts, geopoetics, to Charles Doughty’ Arabia Deserta. It is a largely forgotten fact that Doughty considered all his travels to be leading up to an ars poetica. Omar Bsaïthi’s thesis is that Arabia Deserta is a superb example of geopoetics in action The result of the meeting of White and Doughty orchestrated by Bsaïthi is not only the reinterpretation of an English classic and perhaps a renewal of Arab studies, it is an introduction, via the writings of Kenneth White, to a regrounded field of culture. “In his presentation of geopoetics and intellectual nomadism, Bsaithi draws attention both to the nature of discontent felt in the Western culture and civilization in the postmodern era, and to the possible forms of encounter between figures highly representative of the Western mind, searching for the “ways out”, and other cultural spaces.” —Khalid Hajji, Professor at Mohamed 1rst University, Oujda, Morocoo “It is the merit of Mr Omar Bsaithi’s book to focus on a Franco-Scottish poet to establish an unprecedented correlation with Charles Doughty, author of Travels in Arabia Deserta. By so doing, he applies a method which belongs to Kenneth White’s own geopoetic practice: in a different and a priori foreign cultural context, he reveals similitudes and links through the study of a deeper and more poetic relation to terrestrial space.” —Laurent Margantin, Université de La Réunion
Download or read book Peasants without the Party written by Lucien Bianco and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-04 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring one of the most dynamic and contested regions of the world, this series includes works on political, economic, cultural, and social changes in modern and contemporary Asia and the Pacific. The leading specialist on China's twentieth century peasant resistance reexamines, in bold and original ways, the question: Was the Chinese peasantry a revolutionary force? Where most scholarly attention has focused on Communist-led peasant movements, Bianco's story is one of peasant thought and action largely unmediated by modern political parties. This volume pays particular attention to the first half of the twentieth century when peasant-based conflict, ranging from tax and food protests to secret society conflicts, opium struggles, inter-communal conflicts, and tenant protests over rent, was central to nationwide revolutionary processes.
