S'y trouvent notamment analysés les fonctions et significations des expressions artistiques appréhendées dans des contextes culturels divers ; leurs conditions d'émergence et les critères autochtones de leur définition ; les modes de sélection, d'évaluation et d'appropriation des productions non occidentales par les voyageurs, collecteurs, collectionneurs, institutions muséales ou acteurs du marché de l'art. De manière transversale, s'exprime l'idée qu'une œuvre ne se réduit pas à un objet et ne s'épuise ni dans sa matérialité ni dans sa perception strictement sensorielle. Les discours (critiques, de légitimation, d'authentification, d'explicitation, etc.), l'imaginaire, les affects ou encore les modalités de sa consommation la constituent tout autant. Trop souvent, les musées se sont accordés à ériger la production matérielle des cultures locales en marque symbolique de leur identité et à essentialiser ces cultures en reléguant dans les réserves ce qui relevait trop visiblement d'emprunts ou d'influences. En déconstruisant ce grand mythe occidental d'une altérité vierge de tout mélange, l'approche anthropologique de l'art se refuse à penser le rapport à la création en termes d'oppositions implicitement hiérarchisées en valeur (authentique vs faux, rituel vs commercial, ethnographique vs touristique, esthétique vs politique, etc.). Ethnologues, historiens de l'art et sociologues, les auteurs français et anglo-saxons qui se rencontrent à travers cet ouvrage rendent compte de l'amplitude des perspectives de recherche ainsi ouvertes par l'anthropologie de l'art.

Book excerpt: To call something 'monstrueux' in the mid-sixteenth century is, more often than not, to wonder at its enormous size: it is to call to mind something like a whale. By the late seventeenth 'monstrueux' is more likely to denote hidden intentions, unspoken desires. Several shifts are at work in this word history, and in what Othello calls the 'mighty magic' of monsters; these shifts can be described in a number of ways. The clearest, and most compelling, is the translation or migration of the monstrous from natural history to moral philosophy, from descriptions of creatures found in the external world to the drama of human motivation, of sexual and political identity. This interdisciplinary study of monsters and their meanings advances by way of a series of close readings supported by the exploration of a wide range of texts and images, from many diverse fields, which all concern themselves with illicit coupling, unarranged marriages, generic hybridity, and the politics of monstrosity. Engaging with recent, influential accounts of monstrosity - from literary critical work (Huet, Greenblatt, Thomson Burnett, Hampton), to histories of science and 'bio-politics' (Wilson, Céard, Foucault, Daston and Park, Agamben) - it focusses on the ways in which monsters give particular force, colour, and shape to the imagination; the image at its centre is the triangulated picture of Andromeda, Perseus and the monster, approaching. The centre of the book's gravity is French culture, but it also explores Shakespeare, and Italian, German, and Latin culture, as well as the ways in which the monstrous tales and images of Antiquity were revived across the period, and survive into our own times.

One author to whom this applies in particular is Milan Kundera. In this study, Christine Knoop re-examines Kundera's essayistic and novelistic work against the background of the theoretical paradigms of literary authority, intention, and ownership. In so doing, she demonstrates how he overcomes traditional theoretical distinctions by postulating the existence of both a strong, powerful author figure and of potentially boundless literary meaning. Kundera's radically ambiguous conception of the author in the novel, developed primarily to influence the reader, is discussed and developed to cast new light on the critical debate about authorship at large while maintaining his primary conjecture that authorship as such is perpetually hybrid, dynamic, and unfinished. Eschewing a traditional chronological account, the book explores the nature of relationships between one main period, broadly the 'long' modernist era between 1860–1960, and its own historical ‘others’, referencing topics from the Romantic, classical, baroque, renaissance and medieval periods. It probes the emergent interplay, intertextualities and scope for reinterpretation across time and place. Notions of cultural meaning are paramount, especially those pertaining to French identity, national and individual. While founded on historical musicology, the approach benefits from interdisciplinary association with philosophy, political history, literature, fine art, film studies and criticism. Attention is paid to French composers’ celebrations and remakings of their predecessors.
