Book excerpt: Conversions is the first collection to explicitly address the intersections between sexed identity and religious change in the two centuries following the Reformation. Chapters deal with topics as diverse as convent architecture and missionary enterprise, the replicability of print and the representation of race. Bringing together leading scholars of literature, history and art history, Conversions offers new insights into the varied experiences of, and responses to, conversion across and beyond Europe. A lively Afterword by Professor Matthew Dimmock (University of Sussex) drives home the contemporary urgency of these themes and the lasting legacies of the Reformations.

Book Augustine Through the Ages

Download or read book Augustine Through the Ages written by Allan Fitzgerald and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-volume reference work provides the first encyclopedic treatment of the life, thought, and influence of Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354-430), one of the greatest figures in the history of the Christian church. The product of more than 140 leading scholars throughout the world, this comprehensive encyclopedia contains over 400 articles that cover every aspect of Augustine's life and writings and trace his profound influence on the church and the development of Western thought through the past two millennia. Major articles examine in detail all of Augustine's nearly 120 extant writings, from his brief tractates to his prodigious theological works. For many readers, this volume is the only source for commentary on the numerous works by Augustine not available in English. Other articles discuss: Augustine's influence on other theologians, from contemporaries like Jerome and Ambrose to prominent figures throughout church history, such as Gregory the Great, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and Harnack; Augustine's life, the chaotic political events of his world, and the church's struggles with such heresies as Arianism, Donatism, Manicheism, and Pelagianism; Augustine's thoughts about philosophical problems (time, the ascent of the soul, the nature of truth), theological questions (guilt, original sin, free will, the Trinity), and cultural issues (church-state relations, Roman society).

This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Luther on Conversion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marilyn Harran
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2019-06-30
  • ISBN : 1501743430
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Luther on Conversion written by Marilyn Harran and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is conversion? How does it come about? What preparations must a person make? Harran traces the evolution of Luther's views on these questions, treating his early years as an Augustinian monk, the beginnings of his work as a reformer, and his final evangelical breakthrough, during which he realized the full theological implications of his religious stance. Harran studies Luther's changing interpretations of conversion in his exegetical writings on the Psalms, Romans, Hebrews, and Galatians, in sermons and letters, and in early reform writings, and she considers the relation of conversion to faith, justification, and grace, concepts traditionally viewed as the cornerstones of Luther's mature theology. Introducing new and compelling evidence to the heated debate about Luther's own conversion, she analyzes the accuracy of his later recollections of his "Tower Experience" and its dating. Insightful and innovative, Luther on Conversion will be welcomed by anyone interested in Luther and in the revolution in faith that he brought about.

Book Debt Relief for the Poorest Countries

Download or read book Debt Relief for the Poorest Countries written by Yiagadeesen Samy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debt problems of poor countries are receiving unprecedented attention. Both federal and non-governmental organizations alike have been campaigning for debt forgiveness for poor countries. The governments of creditor nations responded to that challenge at a meeting sponsored by the G-7, International Monetary Fund, and World Bank, all of which upgraded debt relief as a policy priority. Their initiatives provided for generous interpretations of these nations' abilities to sustain debt, gave them opportunities to qualify for debt relief more rapidly, and linked debt relief to broader policies of poverty reduction. Despite this, the crisis has only deepened in the first years of the new millennium. This brilliant group of contributions assesses why this has occurred. In plain language, it considers why debt relief has been so long in coming for poor countries. It evaluates the cost of a persistent overhang in debt for those countries. It also examines, head on, whether enhanced debt relief initiatives offer a permanent exit from over-indebtedness, or are merely a short-term respite. Above all, this volume for the first time addresses the issues on the ground: that is, the views and opinions about debt relief on the part of leaders in advanced nations, and the probability of further support for the most impoverished lands. In this approach, the editors and contributors have made an explicit and successful attempt to be inclusive and relevant at all stages of the analysis. This volume covers the full range of the poorest countries, with contributions by John Serieux, Lykke Anderson and Osvaldo Nina, Befekadu Degefe, Ligia Maria Castro-Monge, and Peter B. Mijumbi. Collectively, they offer a sobering scenario: unless measures are put in place now, in anticipation of further crises, the future of the very poorest nations will remain bleak and troublesome.

Book Gender and Conversion Narratives in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Gender and Conversion Narratives in the Nineteenth Century written by Kirsten Rüther and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing an important social and political issue which is still much debated today, this volume explores the connections between religious conversions and gendered identity against the backdrop of a world undergoing significant social transformations. Adopting a collaborative approach to their research, the authors explore the connections and differences in conversion experiences, tracing the local and regional rootedness of individual conversions as reflected in conversion narratives in three different locations: Germany and German missions in South Africa and colonial Australia, at a time of massive social changes in the 1860s. Beginning with the representation of religious experiences in so-called conversion narratives, the authors explore the social embeddedness of religious conversions and inquire how people related to their social surroundings, and in particular to gender order and gender practices, before, during and after their conversion. With a concluding reflective essay on comparative methods of history writing and transnational perspectives on conversion, this book offers a fresh perspective on historical debates about religious change, gender and social relations.
