Nous décrivons ici la population consommatrice de psychotropes depuis plus de six mois et n'ayant pas consulté de psychiatre au cours des six derniers mois. Nous avons constitué un échantillon aléatoire de soixante personnes, issues de la population consultant aux urgences de l'hôpital de Versailles. A l'aide d'un questionnaire ouvert guidant l'entretien, nous avons étudié les caractéristiques sociodémographiques, professionnelles et sanitaires, les caractéristiques du traitement psychotrope consommé, le mode de prise et l'attitude du patient face au traitement psychotrope. L'échantillon étudié présente un âge élevé (moyenne d'âge de 67.5 ans) avec deux pics de consommateurs de cinquante et quatre vingt ans, un sex ratio déséquilibré de quatre femmes pour un homme. Le traitement est long avec une durée moyenne de consommation de dix ans mais avec une répartition inhomogène, la moitié des personnes consommant depuis six ans, l'autre moitié consommant depuis plus de six ans. Les médicaments les plus consommés sont les anxiolytiques puis les antidépresseurs et les hypnotiques. Les associations de psychotropes concernent la moitié des consommateurs (53%). Les consommateurs interrogés jugent positif le traitement (82%) et ne souhaitent pas l'arrêter pour le moment (97%). Il existe une relation significative entre la longueur du traitement et le souhait de poursuivre le traitement. Les caractéristiques de cet échantillon de consommateurs chroniques sont semblables aux données de la littérature. Cette étude descriptive met en évidence une forte dépendance entre le consommateur et son traitement psychotrope. Les mécanismes d'appropriation liés à la dépendance du traitement sont importants (autonomie, non observance) et posent la question de la possibilité de sevrage chez certains de ces consommateurs chroniques
