Book Competing for Excellence in Architecture

Download or read book Competing for Excellence in Architecture written by Jean-Pierre Chupin and published by Potential Architecture Books. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A travel guide for those in search of architectural quality, this book can be browsed in many ways. Written in a clear and concise manner by about thirty authors, it features a collection of editorials from the Canadian Competitions Catalogue (CCC), a large online digital archive open to the public since 2006. The editorials explore more than sixty Canadian architecture competitions held in the last seventy years. Especially in recent years, both public and private institutions have organized competitions across Canada, producing hundreds of architectural, urban planning, and landscape design projects. Together these proposals, most of which remain unbuilt, constitute a fantastic treasure in our tangible and intangible common heritage. Given that competition organizers, designers, juries, and critics never operate alone, there is no doubt whatsoever that this book results from the collaboration of a myriad of people, contributing to and competing for excellence in architecture. Includes 497 illustrations and analytical tables.

Book Swiss Public Administration

Download or read book Swiss Public Administration written by Andreas Ladner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swiss citizens approve of their government and the way democracy is practiced; they trust the authorities and are satisfied with the range of services Swiss governments provide. This is quite unusual when compared to other countries. This open access book provides insight into the organization and the functioning of the Swiss state. It claims that, beyond politics, institutions and public administration, there are other factors which make a country successful. The authors argue that Switzerland is an interesting case, from a theoretical, scientific and a more practice-oriented perspective. While confronted with the same challenges as other countries, Switzerland offers different solutions, some of which work astonishingly well.

Book Semantic Plurality

Download or read book Semantic Plurality written by Laure Gardelle and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph proposes a comparative approach to all the ways of denoting ‘more than one’ entity, from collective and aggregate nouns (with the first-ever typology), to count plurals, partly substantivised adjectives and conjoined NPs. This semantic feature approach to plurality, which cuts across number, the count/non-count distinction, and lexical/NP levels, reveals a very consistent Scale of Unit Integration, which establishes clear-cut boundaries for collective nouns, and accommodates cases such as three elephant, cattle or a chain of islands. The study also offers a refined understanding of aggregate nouns (a category nearly as large as that of collective nouns) and quantification in pseudo-partitives, develops Guillaume’s notion of ‘internal plurality’, and proposes the innovative concept of ‘hyperonyms of plural classes’ (e.g. furniture). The Animacy Hierarchy is also found to be influential, beyond hybrid agreement. The book aims to be accessible to scholars of any theoretical background interested in these topics.

Book Federalism in Greek Antiquity

Download or read book Federalism in Greek Antiquity written by Hans Beck and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of ancient Greece witnessed some of the most sophisticated and varied experiments with federalism in the pre-modern era. In the volatile interstate environment of Greece, federalism was a creative response to the challenge of establishing regional unity, while at the same time preserving a degree of local autonomy. To reconcile the forces of integration and independence, Greek federal states introduced, for example, the notion of proportional representation, the stratification of legal practice, and a federal grammar of festivals and cults. Federalism in Greek Antiquity provides the first comprehensive reassessment of the topic. It comprises detailed contributions on all federal states in Aegean Greece and its periphery. With every chapter written by a leading expert in the field, the book also incorporates thematic sections that place the topic in a broader historical and social-scientific context.

Book Byzantine Perspectives on Neoplatonism

Download or read book Byzantine Perspectives on Neoplatonism written by Sergei Mariev and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byzantine intellectuals not only had direct access to Neoplatonic sources in the original language but also, at times, showed a particular interest in them. During the Early Byzantine period Platonism significantly contributed to the development of Christian doctrines and, paradoxically, remained a rival world view that was perceived by many Christian thinkers as a serious threat to their own intellectual identity. This problematic relationship was to become even more complex during the following centuries. Byzantine authors made numerous attempts to harmonize Neoplatonic doctrines with Christianity as well as to criticize, refute and even condemn them. The papers assembled in this volume discuss a number of specific questions and concerns that drew the interest of Byzantine scholars in different periods towards Neoplatonic sources in an attempt to identify and explore the central issues in the reception of Neoplatonic texts during the Byzantine era. This is the first volume of the sub-series "Byzantinisches Archiv - Series Philosophica", which will be dedicated to the rapidly growing field of research in Byzantine philosophical texts.
