Book UN CATHARE PARMI LES VAUDOIS DU PI MONT EN 1378 1380 LA D POSITION DE JACOPO BECH

Download or read book UN CATHARE PARMI LES VAUDOIS DU PI MONT EN 1378 1380 LA D POSITION DE JACOPO BECH written by Ruben DE LABASTIDE and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-08-18 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Cathars

Download or read book The Cathars written by Malcolm Barber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second half of the twelfth century, the Catholic Church became convinced that dualist heresy was taking root within Christian society and that it was particularly strong in southern France. The nature and extent of this heresy and the reaction of the Church to the perceived threat have been the focus of extensive research since the mid-nineteenth century, research which has become especially intense in the last decade. Malcolm Barber's second edition of The Cathars (which first appeared in 2000) brings readers up-to-date with the challenges to previous conclusions of recent scholarship. At the same time, the wider implications of the subject remain relevant, most importantly the fundamental questions raised by the belief in the existence of evil, the ethical problems presented by the use of coercion to suppress forms of dissent believed to threaten the social and religious fabric, and the distortion of the past to underpin present-day policies and arguments.

Book excerpt: About This Book: From the second century, until the beginning of the thirteenth century, there was a group of Christians who were prominent in southern France. I first came across this people when I was a missionary in the city of Carcossone, France. You will know them by the name Albigenses or Cathari. I call them by their French name, Les Cathares. The castle on the cover of this book is one of the many built by this people to protect themselves from the Catholic armies of France and Spain. I had the privilege of visiting many of them, and of visiting the Center of Cathare Studies in Carcassone. From these visits I learned that they are some of our Baptist ancestors. In this book you will learn where they came from, what they believed, and why it is important to us today. You will learn that without this people, there would be no America as we know it. It is my hope that this book will give you a better appreciation of the contribution Baptists made to America. The freedoms we enjoy have their roots in Baptist principles. It is my hope that you will find this book both interesting and informative. My desire is that it give you an appreciation for who we are as Baptists.

Book Medieval Monastic Preaching

Download or read book Medieval Monastic Preaching written by Carolyn A. Muessig and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1998-06-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents research by specialists of monastic history, literature, and spirituality. Covering the period from 1150 to 1500, this volume demonstrates that monastic preaching was not only carried out in the cloister by monks, but also in public arenas by monks and nuns. The topics range from questioning if the sermons of Bernard of Clairvaux were ever preached, to an analysis of Hildegard of Bingen's preaching against the Cathars. Sermons addressed to monastic communities by secular preachers are also analysed. The diversity of monastic preaching - e.g., cloistered preaching, preaching against heretics, preaching by heretical monks, preaching by nuns - and a geographical range of monastic pastoral history is studied. Medieval Monastic Preaching offers a preliminary step in understanding how sermons and preaching shaped monastic identity in the Middle Ages.

Book Women s Networks in Medieval France

Download or read book Women s Networks in Medieval France written by Kathryn L. Reyerson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates the connections and interaction among women and between women and men during the medieval period. To do this, Kathryn L. Reyerson focuses specifically on the experiences of Agnes de Bossones, widow of a changer of the mercantile elite of Montpellier. Agnes was a real estate mogul and a patron of philanthropic institutions that permitted lower strata women to survive and thrive in a mature urban economy of the period before 1350. Notably, Montpellier was a large urban center in southern France. Linkages stretched horizontally and vertically in this robust urban environment, mitigating the restrictions of patriarchy and the constraints of gender. Using the story of Agnes de Bossones as a vehicle to larger discussions about gender, this book highlights the undeniable impact that networks had on women’s mobility and navigation within a restrictive medieval society.

Book Inquisition and Power

    Book Details:
  • Author : John H. Arnold
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2013-07-20
  • ISBN : 0812201167

Download or read book Inquisition and Power written by John H. Arnold and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-07-20 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What should historians do with the words of the dead? Inquisition and Power reformulates the historiography of heresy and the inquisition by focusing on depositions taken from the Cathars, a religious sect that opposed the Catholic church and took root in southern France during the twelfth century. Despite the fact that these depositions were spoken in the vernacular, but recorded in Latin in the third person and rewritten in the past tense, historians have often taken these accounts as verbatim transcriptions of personal testimony. This belief has prompted some historians, including E. Le Roy Ladurie, to go so far as to retranslate the testimonies into the first-person. These testimonies have been a long source of controversy for historians and scholars of the Middle Ages. Arnold enters current theoretical debates about subjectivity and the nature of power to develop reading strategies that will permit a more nuanced reinterpretation of these documents of interrogation. Rather than seeking to recover the true voice of the Cathars from behind the inquisitor's framework, this book shows how the historian is better served by analyzing texts as sites of competing discourses that construct and position a variety of subjectivities. In this critically informed history, Arnold suggests that what we do with the voices of history in fact has as much to do with ourselves as with those we seek to 'rescue' from the silences of past.

Book Inquisition and Medieval Society

Download or read book Inquisition and Medieval Society written by James B. Given and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James B. Given analyzes the inquisition in one French region in order to develop a sociology of medieval politics. Established in the early thirteenth century to combat widespread popular heresy, inquisitorial tribunals identified, prosecuted, and punished heretics and their supporters. The inquisition in Languedoc was the best documented of these tribunals because the inquisitors aggressively used the developing techniques of writing and record keeping to build cases and extract confessions.Using a Marxist and Foucauldian approach, Given focuses on three inquiries: what techniques of investigation, interrogation, and punishment the inquisitors worked out in the course of their struggle against heresy; how the people of Languedoc responded to the activities of the inquisitors; and what aspects of social organization in Languedoc either facilitated or constrained the work of the inquisitors. Punishments not only inflicted suffering and humiliation on those condemned, he argues, but also served as theatrical instruction for the rest of society about the terrible price of transgression. Through a careful pursuit of these inquires, Given elucidates medieval society's contribution to the modern apparatus of power.
