To understand the basic role of algae in the global ecosystem, a reliable and modern introduction to their kaleidoscopic diversity, systematics and phylogeny is indispensible. This volume provides such an introduction. The text represents a completely revised and updated edition of a highly acclaimed German textbook which was heralded for its clarity as well as its breadth and depth of information. This new edition takes into account recent re-evaluations in algal systematics and phylogeny which have been made necessary by insights provided by the powerful techniques of molecular genetics and electron microscopy, as well as more traditional life history studies.

Fullyrevised, it describes major bioindicator species in relationto key environmental parameters and their implications for aquaticmanagement. This second edition includes: the same clear writing style as the first edition to provide aneasily accessible source of information on algae within standingand flowing waters, and the problems they may cause the identification of 250 algae using a key based on readilyobservable morphological features that can be readily observedunder a conventional light microscope up-to-date information on the molecular determination of taxonomicstatus, analytical microtechniques and the potential role ofcomputer analysis in algal biology upgrades to numerous line drawings to include more detail and extraspecies information, full colour photographs of live algae –including many new images from the USA and China Bridging the gap between simple identification texts and highlyspecialised research volumes, this book is used both as a comprehensive introduction to the subject and as alaboratory manual. The new edition will be invaluable to aquaticbiologists for algal identification, and for all practitioners andresearchers working within aquatic microbiology in industry andacademia.

Book Phytoplankton in Turbid Environments Rivers and Shallow Lakes

Download or read book Phytoplankton in Turbid Environments Rivers and Shallow Lakes written by J.-P. Descy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ecology of potamoplankton has received less attention than lake plankton. These proceedings produce a synthesis of the composition, community structure and dynamics of lotic phytoplankton, which are intuitively submitted to a strong physical control in the flowing environment, perceived as much more `disturbed' than a lake, even than a well-mixed shallow one. It turns out that the boundary between the phytoplankton of rivers and lakes is not as clear-cut as was thought. In particular, most contributions provide arguments emphasizing the prominent role of physical control in both aquatic systems, especially due to the steep light gradient resulting from turbulent mixing in a turbid water column. Similarities and differences between potamoplankton and limnoplankton, largely based on the information gathered by the contributors are discussed in the introductory paper by Reynolds et al.
