Book New Phenomena in Lepton Hadron Physics

Download or read book New Phenomena in Lepton Hadron Physics written by D. E. Fries and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Summer Institute 1978 was held at Karlsruhe from Sept. 4 to Sept. 16. The title of the school "New Phenomena in Lepton and Hadron Physics" relates to the present very exciting phase in particle physics. An impressive amount of experimental data has been collected in support of a fundamental new picture of the subnuclear world, - a picture which has found its theoretical formulation in Que~tum Chromodynamics and Gau~ theories. It is a general philosophy of the ASI to address the courses mainly to young and learning scientists, hence our major objective was to offer systematic reviews of both, the experimental situa tion and the basic theoretical concepts of the field. This volume contains the written versions of the major lectures delivered during the course. In addition several lectures and seminars had been scheduled in which also more original and specialized subjects were discus sed by invited speakers and participants of the school. Not all of these contributions are contained in this book.

Book Deep inelastic Lepton Scattering by Nuclei The Pion exchange Model

Download or read book Deep inelastic Lepton Scattering by Nuclei The Pion exchange Model written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quark constituents of nucleons were discovered in deep-inelastic electron scattering. It is not surprising therefore that the nuclear effects in deep-inelastic lepton scattering first observed by the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) have spawned many suggestions of revolutionary changes in our views of nuclear structure. Perhaps quarks play a far more active role in nuclear dynamics than the conventional theory provides. Before following the natural appeal of radical conclusions we believe it is important to examine in quantitative detail the consequences of the conventional nuclear model, in which the nucleon-nucleon potential features a one-pion exchange tail at large distances, an intermediate range attraction dominated by two-pion exchange and a strong short-range phenomenological repulsion. For this purpose let us assume that quarks are strictly confined to single hadrons, and that the quark structure of the hadrons in a nucleus is not affected by their environment. These assumptions allow a consistent description of deep-inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering, and the quantitative consequences agree well with available data. 15 refs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physicists actively engaged in advanced research should be en couraged to discuss results and deepen their theoretical understand ing of the data. It is practically impossible nowadays to achieve the goal of the old times when small groups of scientists had the privilege of debating their ideas and the details of their experi ments in an informal and friendly way. Conferences are now too wide in scientific coverage and, in consequence, there are often too many participants. The Highly Specialized Seminars of the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture are intended to provide such a forum for scientists of outstanding reputation in their fields to exchange information. This volume deals with one of the most interesting topics in subnuclear physics, and Professor Giuliano Preparata is one of the world's leaders in the field. This volume contains the most recent results on the study of deep inelastic phenomena, using neutrinos, muons and electrons against nucleons, and (e+e- ) interactions. It represents our best knowledge of the field as given by some of the most distinguished world experts in the theoretical and experimental domain. Antonino Zichichi, Director Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture v PREFACE In March 1979, about 50 physicists gathered in Erice to parti cipate in the Fourth Highly Specialized Seminar on "Probing Hadrons with Leptons."

Book Perspectives in the Structure of Hadronic Systems

Download or read book Perspectives in the Structure of Hadronic Systems written by M.N. Harakeh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has been witness to many exciting and rapid developments in the fields of Nuclear Physics and Intermediate Energy Physics, the interface between Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics. These developments involved to a large extent the sub nucleonic degrees of freedom in nuclei. In deep inelastic lepton scattering from nuclei, for example, it was observed that the quark structure of the nucleon is influenced by the nuclear medium. Also, the spin-dependent structure function of the nucleon was found to differ from sum rules based on SU(3) symmetry, a discrepancy referred to as the "spin crisis". In pion electroproduction at threshold and in the production of pions and other mesons in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies interesting experimental results have been obtained, which triggered lively theoretical discussions. Furthermore, the search for the quark-gluon plasma phase of hadronic matter, a phase that is supposed to have existed in the first few seconds of the Big Bang, has been intensified. Not only were these developments accompanied by technical developments, such as the building of new experimental facilities, but also extensive theoretical efforts have been directed towards understanding these phenomena. These concerted efforts will hopefully lead to an understanding of the transition from the non-perturbative QCD regime to the perturbative one, in which the quark structure of nucleons is better understood. All of the aforementioned developments occur at a high pace, making it difficult to incorporate them into the courses offered to advanced students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic progress has been made in all branches of physics since the National Research Council's 1986 decadal survey of the field. The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.

This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of protons and neutrons, or "nucleons"â€"the building blocks of atomic nucleiâ€"has advanced dramatically, both theoretically and experimentally, in the past half century. A central goal of modern nuclear physics is to understand the structure of the proton and neutron directly from the dynamics of their quarks and gluons governed by the theory of their interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and how nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons emerge from these dynamics. With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today. This study assesses the merits and significance of the science that could be addressed by an EIC, and its importance to nuclear physics in particular and to the physical sciences in general. It evaluates the significance of the science that would be enabled by the construction of an EIC, its benefits to U.S. leadership in nuclear physics, and the benefits to other fields of science of a U.S.-based EIC.
