Book excerpt: Recent experimental data and theoretical developments on the production of lepton pairs in hadron collisions are reviewed. With emphasis on the interplay between theory and experiment, the relevance of theoretical calculations to the data available at present energies is critically examined. The Drell--Yan mechanism is found to be phenomenologically dominant provided that the parton distribution functions contain effects of gluon radiation in a narrow cone. Explicit QCD perturbative calculations of the non-Drell--Yan type yield results that are apparently important at large transverse momenta, but are contradicated by subsequent data at 400 GeV and below. A consistent picture in the parton model is sketched. Further experiments to probe the basic mechanism are suggested. 83 references.

Book excerpt: The hadroproduction of lepton pairs with mass Q and transverse momentum Q{sub T} can be described in perturbative QCD by the same partonic subprocesses as prompt photon production. They demonstrate that, like prompt photon production, lepton pair production is dominated by quark-gluon scattering in the region Q{sub T}> Q/2. This leads to sensitivity to the gluon density in kinematical regimes that are accessible both at collider and fixed target experiments while eliminating the theoretical and experimental uncertainties present in prompt photon production.

Book excerpt: A review is presented of theoretical attempts to describe the massive lepton pair continuum produced in hadronic collisions. Beginning with the classical Drell-Yan quark-antiquark annihilation model, its expectations are compared with data. Scaling violations and corrections to the Drell-Yan pictured are discussed. Next, original work is presented bearing on the understanding of the transverse momentum distributions of the dileptons. In a parton model, the quark-gluon scattering graphs which provide scaling violations also endow the dileptons with relatively large (P/sub T/). Comparisons with available data support these QCD expectations; further tests of the QCD predictions are proposed. Implications are drawn for W production experiments, and predictions are presented for reactions initiated by antiprotons.

The model is based on classical Nambu-Goto strings. The string motion is performed in unrestricted four-dimensional space-time. The string endpoints are interpreted as partons which carry energy and momentum. We study ee−, e -- p, and p -- p collisions at various center of mass energies. The three basic features of our model are as follows. An ensemble of strings with different endpoint dynamics is used to approximately reproduce the valence quark structure functions. We introduce an adiabatic hadronization mechanism for string breakup via q{bar q} pair production. The interaction between strings is formulated in terms of a quark-quark scattering amplitude and exchange. This model will be used to describe relativistic heavy-ion collisions in future work. 28 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Regarding the complication as being due to the many gluon interactions in the initial state, a thermal parton model is considered which is a combination of the thermodynamical model and the usual parton model. With practically no free parameter the observed features of can be reproduced with the correct dependences on the incident energy and the mass and rapidity of the dileptons.
