Book Tigris and Euphrates Rivers Their Environment from Headwaters to Mouth

Download or read book Tigris and Euphrates Rivers Their Environment from Headwaters to Mouth written by Laith A. Jawad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-12 with total page 1612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The system of the Tigris-Euphrates Rivers is one of the great river systems of southwestern Asia. It comprises the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, which follow roughly parallel courses through the heart of the Middle East. The lower portion of the region that they run through is known as Mesopotamia, was one of the cradles of civilisation. There are several environmental factors that govern the nature of the two rivers and shape the landscape the two rivers running through. Geological events create rivers, climate monitor the water supply, the surrounding land influences the vegetation and the physical and chemical features of water. The Tigris-Euphrates system runs through the territory of four countries, Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria. Therefore, any scientific approach to the environment of these two rivers should include the natural history events in these countries. The book "Tigris and Euphrates Rivers: Their Environment from Headwaters to Mouth" will be divided into nine parts. These parts deal with the issues of the environment, the status of the flora and fauna, the abiotic aspects, ecology, hydrological regime of the two rivers, the biotic aspects. Water resources, stress of the environment, conservation issues. Since the book of Julian Rzoska "Euphrates and Tigris Mesopotamian Ecology and Destiny" in 1980, no book or major reference has been published that includes between its cover the facts and information that the present book will present. Therefore, the importance of the present book falls in stating the present status of the environment of the two rivers and the comparison of their environment between now and that of 37 years ago as given by J. Rzoska (1980). The recent studies showed that there are a large number of natural and political events that happened within the last three decades in the area of the Tigris-Euphrates river system that for sure have done a great change to the environment of the two rivers and consequently changing the biological and non-biological resources of the two rivers. This book will be a reference book to both Academic and students across the Middle East in different disciplines of knowledge to use in their researches on Tigris-Euphrates river system. The scholars interested in this area will use this book as a guide to compare this freshwater system with other areas in Asia and the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a record of the proceedings of the IXth International Rotifer Symposium, which was held in Khon Kaen, Thailand, on January 16-23, 2000. The symposium was the first meeting of the international group of rotifer researchers held in Asia. The volume contains reviews and research papers dealing with diverse aspects of scientific research related to Rotifera and their ecology. Some of the topics addressed are: taxonomy and zoogeography, ecology, phylogeny and evolution, physiology, biochemistry and population genetics, aquaculture, and ecotoxicology. This book is special because it contains a unique compilation of contemporary rotifer-related research, and is the eighth of a series of rotifer symposium proceedings published in Developments of Hydrobiology. This update of Rotifera studies will be of great interest to invertebrate zoologists, hydrobiologists, ecologists, and aquaculturists, particularly those interested in freshwater habitats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many famous wetlands in the world that have been deemed important for the homeostasis ofthe biosphere and accorded some form ofprotected status in view of the richness of their flora and fauna. T}1e Pantanal, located almost directly in the center ofthe South American continent, is among the largest such wetlands in the world. It is, in fact, the largest wetland that is still in a nearly natural state and has not been extensively modified by man for agriculture. The extent of the region covered by flood waters at the end of each rainy season varies from year to year, sometimes considerably, so estimates of the exact area it occupies have varied enormously. The size of the 2 2 Pantanal has been reported to be between 80,000 km (Bonetto, 1975) and 250,000 km (Tundisi and Matsumura-Tundisi, 1985). The most co~on1y accepted estimates at the present time are approximately 130,000 to 140,000 km , supported by estimates made from Nimbus-7 satellite observations (Hamilton et al. , 1996). However, Por (1995) suggested that the area extending into Bolivia and Paraguay has not been satisfactorily 2 surveyed, leading him to accept the figure of 200,000 km as the area of the entire Pantanal, ineluding all of its extensions. The main reason for the year to year variation in the extent of the flooding is the considerable difference in timing of the rainfall on the watershed.

This This was followed by an evening banquet with meeting continued the tradition of holding rotifer traditional Scottish entertainment. On Thursday symposia at three-year intervals. The first an evening most participants attended a fireworks dis nouncement of the fourth meeting was circulated at play which was part of the Edinburgh Festival. Fi the end of 1983 to almost 300 people whose names nally, an excursion to Loch Lomond and the Tros appeared on the mailing list of the international sach hills was arranged for the Saturday after the newsletter, Rotifer News. In total, 68 people from meeting. 23 countries attended the meeting. It is interesting The organisers would like to thank Mr. C. J. to note that, of these 68 participants, 21 had at Place and colleagues at the Institute of Terrestrial tended the first meeting, held in Linz, Austria, Ecology for their invaluable help in organising the 1976, and 13 had attended all three previous meet meeting and preparing the symposium volume for ings. publication. Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the Seventh International Rotifer Symposium, Rotifera VII, spans subjects from community ecology through biochemistry, from the most basic science through the most clearly applied technology. Some papers report exceptional progress in our knowledge of rotifer anatomy and biochemistry, as well as rotifer molecular biology, evolution and life histories. The book also contains an interesting article describing a hundred years of Polish contributions to rotiferology as well as papers discussing both general patterns of rotifer biogeography and rotifer distribution in different habitats, together with many aspects of the ecology of rotifer species, populations and communities. Audience: This update on rotifer taxonomy, biology and ecology will be of great interest to zoologists, especially hydrobiologists studying the structure and function of freshwater zooplankton.
