Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan cuts straight to the heart of a man who stalks the shadows in an intoxicating Leopard novel. Though he was born into a leopard’s lair in the bayou, Joshua Tregre’s fighting skills were honed in the rain forests of Borneo. Sleek and deadly, he’s the perfect man to take over a crime syndicate back home in Louisiana’s lush swamplands. His razor-sharp instincts give him an edge in the violent underworld he knows so well, but even the watchful leopard inside him isn’t prepared for the threat that comes from the girl next door... She is a woman who can create beauty out of thin air—and out of the ruins of her own life. The games that dangerous men play have taken their toll on her, but she is bent, not broken. And it’s her fierce spirit that’s like a lure to Joshua, a temptation he can’t resist—even if it means bringing his true nature into the light...

Book excerpt: Nights in the swamp were often sultry. Heat and moisture drifted through the cypress groves and clung to the long shawls of lacy Spanish moss hanging from crooked branches. The long-fringed drapes swayed in the slight breeze, adding a macabre feel to the already eerie night. Frogs chorused loudly, hundreds of them, calling out joyously while raccoons slipped noiselessly down to the duckweed-filled water to wash their paws. Two bull alligators challenged for territory, their bellows reverberating through the air.Sonia Lopez followed the narrow game trail, the one she d widened over the last few weeks that led deeper into the swamp. Insects droned all around her, a loud cacophony of sound. None stopped when she stepped lightly along the ground, a tribute to the fact that she d spent every night for the last two months learning every inch of the piece of swamp that belonged to her. She owned forty acres and wanted to become acquainted with all of it. For this. She d known it was coming, and she was very, very glad she d prepared.

Book Can Leopards Change Their Spots

Download or read book Can Leopards Change Their Spots written by William Jefferson and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around AD 116, with early Christianity under extreme pressure, Roman Emperor Trajan condemned Bishop Ignatius, of the Antioch church of Syria, to execution by lions in the Roman Coliseum, for Ignatius's refusal to recognize Trajan and other Roman gods as deities, and for proclaiming Yahweh, and his son, Jesus Christ Incarnate, the only true and living God. Trajan's highly decorated soldiers, led by Captain Maximus Aurelius, secured Ignatius on a year-long death march from Syria to Rome, chained to the soldiers daily, to humiliate and intimidate Ignatius and fellow Christians. Along their journey, Ignatius wrote seven encouraging letters to Christian churches, in some of which he figuratively referred to these soldiers as leopards, because of their cruelty. Ignatius's letters and his actions, expressing his love and forgiveness, even for those vicious soldiers and for Trajan, caused Aurelius and some of the soldiers, to begin to question the then commonly held Roman view of Christianity as a fanatical superstition, led by lunatics and followed by a band of atheist, and, therefore, to also question their traditional faiths in the gods of Rome. Most impressive about Ignatius to the soldiers, was not only Ignatius's embrace of death, but his belief that to die in faith in God is to gain eternal life with Him in heaven. Bitter conflicts arose among the soldiers over these matters, which exposed Aurelius's budding Christian faith to Roman authorities. In Rome, Aurelius's confession of faith in the God of Ignatius, and his rejection of Trajan's offers to publicly denounce Christ, resulted in Trajan ordering Aurelius's death in the Coliseum with Ignatius. Aurelius's faith is strengthened as he endured beatings, isolation and imprisonment with Ignatius, touching the lives of others, who become advocates for Christianity. In the Coliseum, this story imagined the favor of God showing up for Ignatius and Aurelius, in the form of miraculous happenings with the lion keepers, with the lions, and with Ignatius's and Aurelius's transformation into heavenly beings before the blood-sport-minded Roman Coliseum patrons. Though many believe in Christ through these miracles, Trajan refused to accept the sovereignty of Ignatius's God, and suffered his own excruciating death. At its core, this storyaEUR"though it depicts actual historical persons, places and events in fictional guiseaEUR"encompasses scriptural guarantees exemplifying the availability of the limitless power of the Holy Spirit, through love, its most precious fruit, to forgive and reach even the most hardened and resistant of men and women through God's redeeming Word, and of the reality of God's promise to believers of abiding comfort in this world, and of an awaiting home with Him in Heavenly Glory, a promise extending through the life and times of Ignatius, a real-life martyr, to each of us to this day.

Book excerpt: The twins destiny was decided by an age-old tradition long before they were born, but it was somehow altered through the application of wisdom and intellect by human intervention. The abnormal in society was normalised by custodians of tradition and the rule of customary law, councillors, and respected village elders vested with authority and the power to decide and act. Giving the twins a lifeline and letting them live when they should have been killed without any second thought about who their father is amounted to nepotism and infringed on the right of the one whose destiny was decided in an unorthodox way. This was an unforgivable violation of an ancestral practice, a grave transgression with dire consequences which pitted brother against brother, paving a path of dark hatred, witchcraft, and ultimately, murder in the guise of darkness with no witnesses. With the chiefs wife barren, leaving the clan without a leader, the throne without an heir was apparent and the inheritance shone brighter and larger in the direction of the perpetrator. If Makgabeng was destined to be in Seras hands, then the gods had surely erred in their judgement. How could they have sacrificed Paramount Chief Thaga at the altar of conspiracy, greed, and corruption? Would Lefa live to see the day and his rightful throne?

From the jazz clubs of Manhattan to the villages of Sri Lanka, Kristopher Jansma’s hopelessly unreliable—yet hopelessly earnest—narrator will be haunted by the success of his greatest friend and literary rival, the brilliant Julian McGann, and endlessly enamored with Evelyn, the green-eyed girl who got away. Book My Life With Leopards Graham Cooke s Story

Download or read book My Life With Leopards Graham Cooke s Story written by Fransje van Riel and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-09-03 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human emotion and animal instinct meet poignantly when two six-week-old leopard cubs become the charge of 22-year-old game ranger Graham Cooke at Londolozi. Staying with the cubs in an unfenced bush camp surrounded by lions, hyenas and other leopards, he must first gain their trust before he begins to guide them towards release in the wild. It takes weeks of patience and gentleness for Graham to be accepted into the cubs' small family unit and to find ways of communicating with the young leopards as he slowly begins to introduce them to their new environment. Graham finds himself drawn more to the wary little female than her easy-going brother, but over time both cubs come to recognise him as their protector. They form a bond of friendship through which he can gain unparalleled insights into their development and behaviour. When, a year later, the cubs are relocated to the Zambian wilderness, Graham faces the hardest task of all: to set free the young animals he has become so devoted to so that they can return to a wild existence where he is unable to control their fate.
