Book Leonie of the Jungle

Download or read book Leonie of the Jungle written by Joan Conquest and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Leonie of the Jungle' is an adventure novel set in India, written by Joan Conquest. Jonathan Cuxson, Jr., a brain surgeon and one of the main characters of the book, discovered an abandoned orphan one day. He lifted the child on to his knee, frowning at the weight, and smoothed the tangled mass of curls away from the low forehead with a touch which caused her to make a sound 'twixt sob and sigh, and to lie back against the broad shoulder. It was a long and disjointed story, told in the inconsequent fashion of a child of seven unused to converse with her elders; and continually interrupted by the aunt, who, fretful and dying for her tea, jingled her distracting bracelets and chains, fidgeted with the Anglo-Indian odds-and-ends of her raiment, and disconcerted the child by the futile verbal proddings; which are as bad for the infant mind as the criminal attempts to force a baby to use its legs are to the infant body.

  • Author : Rudyard Kipling

Download or read book The Jungle Book Classic Reprint written by Rudyard Kipling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-21 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the collection of Rudyard Kipling short stories known as The Jungle Book. The most famous of these are about Mowgli the wolf boy, and have been adapted for comics, stage, film and television many times. Mowgli's adventures in the forest and battles with the tiger Shere Khan are exciting and should be a part of any child's reading material. The other stories are shorter, but just as entertaining. Rikki-tikki-tavi, about a brave mongoose and his battle against snakes, is a particular favourite of many and The White Seal and Toomi of the Elephants are well loved and enjoyable too. After each story comes a poem or song about the same topic. These are highly moral stories, which have lead some to conclude that they were based on current events of the times, but there is no evidence of that from the author himself and they were probably written for his daughter. Rudyard Kipling knew a great deal about the animals of which he wrote and this comes through in the details of their lives in these tales. This book thoroughly deserves the devotion it receives from its fans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Long Voyage

Download or read book The Long Voyage written by Malcolm Cowley and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critic, poet, editor, chronicler of the “lost generation,” and elder statesman of the Republic of Letters, Malcolm Cowley (1898–1989) was an eloquent witness to much of twentieth-century American literary and political life. These letters, the vast majority previously unpublished, provide an indelible self-portrait of Cowley and his time, and make possible a full appreciation of his long and varied career. Perhaps no other writer aided the careers of so many poets and novelists. Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Kerouac, Tillie Olsen, and John Cheever are among the many authors Cowley knew and whose work he supported. A poet himself, Cowley enjoyed the company of writers and knew how to encourage, entertain, and when necessary scold them. At the center of his epistolary life were his friendships with Kenneth Burke, Allen Tate, Conrad Aiken, and Edmund Wilson. By turns serious and thoughtful, humorous and gossipy, Cowley’s letters to these and other correspondents display his keen literary judgment and ability to navigate the world of publishing. The letters also illuminate Cowley’s reluctance to speak out against Stalin and the Moscow Trials when he was on staff at The New Republic—and the consequences of his agonized evasions. His radical past would continue to haunt him into the Cold War era, as he became caught up in the notorious “Lowell Affair” and was summoned to testify in the Alger Hiss trials. Hans Bak supplies helpful notes and a preface that assesses Cowley’s career, and Robert Cowley contributes a moving foreword about his father.

Book Bridge Over the River Kwai

Download or read book Bridge Over the River Kwai written by Pierre Boulle and published by Ishi Press. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnificent story of Colonel Nicholson, who built the perfect bridge - for the enemy. On its publication in France, this brilliant novel was awarded the Prix Ste. Beuve. Since its appearance in the USA and its presentation as a film, this compelling story has been awarded a succession of prizes in both the fields of entertainment and literature. This is a historical novel. It is based in part on factual events. It was made into the greatest movie ever made. Although hard to believe, the book is based on actual real historical events, except that vastly more people died building the real bridge and the railroad to the bridge than are shown in the movie. The book and movie have slightly different names. The book is "The Bridge Over the River Kwai." The movie is "The Bridge On the River Kwai." In Thailand, they call it the River Kwae.

Book Peace Child

Download or read book Peace Child written by Don Richardson and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Cannibals to Christ-Followers--A True Story In 1962, Don and Carol Richardson risked their lives to share the gospel with the Sawi people of New Guinea. Peace Child tells their unforgettable story of living among these headhunters and cannibals, who valued treachery through fattening victims with friendship before the slaughter. God gave Don and Carol the key to the Sawi hearts via a redemptive analogy from their own mythology. The "peace child" became the secret to unlocking a value system that had existed through generations. This analogy became a stepping-stone by which the gospel came into the Sawi culture and started both a spiritual and a social revolution from within. With an epilogue updating how the gospel has impacted the Sawi people, this missionary classic will inspire a new generation of readers who need to hear this remarkable story and the lessons it teaches us about communicating Christ in a meaningful way to those around us.
