Book excerpt: Paul Beaumont is a scientist who labored for years alone to prove his radical theories on the origin of mankind. Baron Regnard becomes his patron, enabling him to do research while living in his mansion. One day, Beaumont announces to his beloved wife Marie and the baron that he has proved all his theories and is ready to present them before the Academy of the Sciences. He leaves the arrangements to the baron. However, after Beaumont goes to sleep, Marie steals his key, opens the safe containing his papers, and gives them to the baron. It is clear that Marie and the baron are lovers. On the appointed day, Paul travels to the Academy with the baron. He is aghast when the baron, instead of introducing him, takes credit for Paul's work himself. After he recovers from the shock, Paul confronts him in front of everyone, but the baron tells them that Paul is merely his assistant and slaps him. All of the academicians laugh at his humiliation. Paul later seeks comfort from his wife, but she brazenly admits she and the baron are having an affair and calls him a clown. Paul leaves them. Five years pass by. Paul is now a clown calling himself "He who gets slapped", the star attraction of a small circus near Paris. His act consists of him getting slapped every evening by other clowns. - Wikipedia

Book Anathema

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leonid Andreyev
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1910
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Anathema written by Leonid Andreyev and published by . This book was released on 1910 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This play was first produced by Stanislavsky in Moscow in 1909. It treats one 'David', who inherits a fortune and sets out to relieve the suffering of the world. Vast crowds gather round him, their sense of their own hardship intensified. When his resources are exhausted and he can do no more for them, they turn against him, and finally stone him to death. He is manipulated throughout by 'Anathema', a Satanic figure who wishes to have something to strengthen his case against God the Creator. But when he challenges an angel at the heavenly gates, the angel replies that good and evil on earth cannot be measured: the goodness that David represents has a value that is incomparable and transcendent. The play excited lively debate in the Russian Orthodox Church at the time, between those who condemned it as an attack on Christianity and those who praised it as a vindication of Christianity. Further performances were finally banned after intervention by Tsar Nicholas II, whose piety was equal to his stupidity. Apart from its theology, the play has the great merit of presenting two chief characters, David and Anathema, who are subtle and arresting figures that, in the first production, gave great actors real scope.

Book The Little Angel and Other Stories

Download or read book The Little Angel and Other Stories written by Leonid Andreyev and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable collection of short expressionist stories by Russian playwright, novelist, and short-story writer, Leonid Nikolaievich Andreyev, who was considered to be the father of Expressionism in Russian literature. Traces of compassion, beauty, and sympathetic insight are encountered on every page side by side with barbarity and crudeness, the reason being that Andreyev portrays life without hiding, without neglecting any part of it. The Little Angel, and other stories (1916) was of one of his collections that were extensively translated into book form. The plots in these stories are straightforward, the characters are isolated, and the endings are harsh and profound in their sadness. Because of the cumulative descriptions of the strange and the dreadful, Andreyev has been called the Russian Edgar Allan Poe. During the 1914-1929 period, America was eager for anything similar to Edgar Allan Poe. As Poe's Russian equivalent, translations of Andreyev's work found a ready audience in the English-speaking world. This collection contains the following short stories: The Little Angel At the Roadside Station Snapper The Lie An Original Petka at the Bungalow Silence Laughter The Friend In the Basement The City The Marseillaise The Tocsin Bargamot and Garaska Stepping-stones The Spy

Translated into English for the first time since 1905, it is here paired with a fresh translation of Andreyev’s earlier story “The Abyss,” which caused scandal upon its first publication. This edition provides an illuminating introduction by translator Kirsten Lodge as well as a range of background materials that help set the novel in its historical, literary, and artistic contexts.

After his father's death he was thrown upon his own resources, but managed to study at both Petrograd and Moscow Universities, graduating in Law in 1897. During this period he endured great hardship—often even actual hunger—and was the victim of deep melancholia. His first writings were unsuccessful; and, for a time, he devoted himself to painting. Later he came into touch with the Russian press as police-court reporter for a leading newspaper. The story "The Little Angel" (1899) about a teenager - half-hungry, offended by the whole world "wolf cub". Once on a holiday in a rich house, he saw an angel on a Christmas tree. A toy becomes for him a sign of the "wonderful world where he once lived." She must belong to him! And the boy, who endured a lot, defending his pride, falls to his knees in front of the "unpleasant aunt." The most famous and inspirational works of Leonid Andreyev include "Judas Iscariot," "The Red Laugh," "The Seven Who Were Hanged," "The Life of Man," "Anathema," "The Black Maskers," "The Sabine Women," "The Tragedy of Belgium."
