Book excerpt: On August 1, 1917 - three years after the outbreak of WW1 - pope Benedict XV signed his famous peace note, urging the governments of the belligerent Powers to seek a diplomatic solution to their disputes and stop the "useless massacre". In order to commemorate the event and to define the place of this "forgotten pope" in twentieth-century history, on November 3-5, 2016, the Fondazione per le Scienze Religiose Giovanni XXIII (Fscire) hosted an international conference, entitled "Benedict XV in the world of the useless massacre", in which more than a hundred historians from all over the world participated. The aim of the initiative, supported by the Historical and Scientific Committee for Italy's National Anniversaries, is to shed light on the key issues of this pontificate, from Giacomo Della Chiesa's education in the theological seminary in Genua to his heritage and memory all along the twentieth century. The volume resulting from this conference provides a comprehensive and systematic reference work about a key figure in Church history that has all too often been neglected.

Book Prisoner of the Vatican

Download or read book Prisoner of the Vatican written by David I. Kertzer and published by HMH. This book was released on 2006-02-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize winner’s “fascinating” account of the political battles that led to the end of the Papal States (Entertainment Weekly). From a National Book Award–nominated author, this absorbing history chronicles the birth of modern Italy and the clandestine politics behind the Vatican’s last stand in the battle between the church and the newly created Italian state. When Italy’s armies seized the Holy City and claimed it for the Italian capital, Pope Pius IX, outraged, retreated to the Vatican and declared himself a prisoner, calling on foreign powers to force the Italians out of Rome. The action set in motion decades of political intrigue that hinged on such fascinating characters as Garibaldi, King Viktor Emmanuel, Napoleon III, and Chancellor Bismarck. Drawing on a wealth of secret documents long buried in the Vatican archives, David I. Kertzer reveals a fascinating story of outrageous accusations, mutual denunciations, and secret dealings that will leave readers hard-pressed to ever think of Italy, or the Vatican, in the same way again. “A rousing tale of clerical skullduggery and topsy-turvy politics, laced with plenty of cross-border intrigue.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Book The Unknown Pope

Download or read book The Unknown Pope written by John Pollard and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth and extensively researched biography of Pope Benedict XV. Best known for his efforts to end World War I, Benedict XV was the first contemporary pope to assume the role of peacemaker, a role that has persisted in the papacy since. Although Benedict's 1917 Peace Note was rejected by officials, he went on to help establish Save the Children and to lead European efforts at humanitarian aid. His brief pontificate resulted in a positive reassessment of the Church's attitude towards colonialism and colonized peoples. Using previously unpublished correspondence and private papers from the Vatican archives, John Pollard has written the first biography on Benedict XV in almost half a century.

Book Dante and the Victorians

Download or read book Dante and the Victorians written by Alison Milbank and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milbank (English, U. of Cambridge) argues that an understanding of Victorianism's reception of Dante is essential for understanding its notions of history, nationalism, aesthetics, and gender as well as the often strange intersections between any two or more of them. She offers a new genealogy of literature in modern times, substituting a continuous Dantism for the conventional tale of Victorian realism and historicism challenged by modernist symbolism. She also finds Dante to be the first writer to historicize, fictionalize, and humanize the eternal realm, and therefore the route through which history, secularized fiction, and positivist humanism can be traced to a lost transcendent.
