In a comedy of errors, two young people, Leonce of Popo and Princess Lena of Pipi, are destined to make their peace in an arranged marriage. Horrified at the thought of not knowing their betrothed, they flee, but upon a chance meeting they are love struck. Overwhelmed with emotion, Lena departs leaving Leonce distraught. But the King insists that a wedding take place—royals or no royals—for the people who have waited tirelessly to see a ceremony. Cloaked in masks two young people are brought to the altar—introduced as world famous robots—an effigy of a royal wedding. But when the masks are removed Leonce and Lena are euphoric to see each other’s identities. It’s a joyful affair and the King retires, passing the reigning power to Leonce. Book Persistence of Folly

Download or read book Persistence of Folly written by Joel B. Lande and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joel B. Lande’s Persistence of Folly challenges the accepted account of the origins of German theater by focusing on the misunderstood figure of the fool, whose spontaneous and impish jest captivated audiences, critics, and playwrights from the late sixteenth through the early nineteenth century. Lande radically expands the scope of literary historical inquiry, showing that the fool was not a distraction from attempts to establish a serious dramatic tradition in the German language. Instead, the fool was both a fixture on the stage and a nearly ubiquitous theme in an array of literary critical, governmental, moral-philosophical, and medical discourses, figuring centrally in broad-based efforts to assign laughter a proper time, place, and proportion in society. Persistence of Folly reveals the fool as a cornerstone of the dynamic process that culminated in the works of Lessing, Goethe, and Kleist. By reorienting the history of German theater, Lande’s work conclusively shows that the highpoint of German literature around 1800 did not eliminate irreverent jest in the name of serious drama, but instead developed highly refined techniques for integrating the comic tradition of the stage fool.

Book Commitment and Compassion

Download or read book Commitment and Compassion written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writer, scientist, philosopher, and radical democrat Georg Büchner (1813-1837) occupies a unique place in the cultural legacy of the German-speaking countries. Born into an epoch of inevitable, yet arrested historical transition, Büchner produced a small but exceptionally rich body of work. This collection of essays in English and in German considers the full spectrum of his writings, the political pamphlet Der Hessische Landbote, the dramas Danton’s Tod, Leonce und Lena, Woyzeck, and the fragmentary narrative Lenz, as well as the letters, the philosophical lectures on Descartes and Spinoza, and the scientific texts. The essays examine connections between these works, study texts in detail, debate ways of editing them, and trace their reception in contemporary literature and film. The novel readings presented here not only celebrate Büchner on the eve of his bicentenary birthday but also insert this untimely figure into discussions of the revolution-restoration dynamic and realism in poetics and politics.

Book excerpt: This is your rhetoric translated. These wretches, these executioners, the guillotine are your speeches come to life. You have built your doctrines out of human heads... Why should an event that transforms the whole of humanity not advance through blood? 1794: the French Revolution reaches its climax. After a series of bloody purges the life-loving, volatile Danton is tormented by his part in the killing. His political rival, the driven, ascetic Robespierre, decides Danton's fate. A titanic struggle begins. Once friends who wanted to change the world, now one stands for compromise the other for ideological purity as the guillotine awaits. A revolutionary himself, George Büchner was 21 when he wrote the play in 1835, while hiding from the police. With its hair-raising on-rush of scenes and vivid dramatisation of complex, visionary characters, Danton's Death has a claim to be the greatest political tragedy ever written. In his newly-revised translation, Howard Brenton captures Büchner's exhilarating energy as Danton struggles to avoid his inexorable fall.

At its core, Distant Transit is an ode to survival, building a monument to traditions and lives lost. Infused with movement, Maja Haderlap’s Distant Transit traverses Slovenia’s scenic landscape and violent history, searching for a sense of place within its ever-shifting boundaries. Avoiding traditional forms and pronounced rhythms, Haderlap unleashes a flow of evocative, captivating passages whose power lies in their associative richness and precision of expression, vividly conjuring Slovenia’s natural world––its rolling meadows, snow-capped alps, and sparkling Adriatic coast. Belonging to the Slovene ethnic minority and its inherited, transgenerational trauma, Haderlap explores the burden of history and the prolonged aftershock of conflict––warm, lavish pastoral passages conceal dark memories, and musings on the way language can create and dissolve borders reveal a deep longing for a sense of home.

Book Georg B chner

Download or read book Georg B chner written by John Reddick and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unflagging revolutionary, closet Christian, extreme nihilist? Different periods and critics have interpreted Georg Buchner in a variety of ways. Although he died when only twenty-three, Buchner's handful of works count among the greatest achievements of modern German writing, and seem to speak with ever greater power and immediacy. This is the first major new study of Buchner in English for nearly twenty years, and it includes original readings of works such as Dantons Tod, Leonce und Lena, and Woyzeck. John Reddick provocatively argues that Buchner was aesthetically so far ahead of his time mainly because he was seriously behind the times in his essentially idealist premises and aspirations."

With this topical episode, Tom Angleberger demonstrates once again that his "grasp of middle-school emotions, humor and behavior is spot-on" (Scripps Howard News Service). Praise for Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue "Fans will devour this satisfying and nicely realistic conclusion to the story set up in the previous volume. Characters grow, and non-Star Wars pop-culture references seep in. Readers new to the series are advised to go back to the beginning; they won't regret it." --Kirkus Reviews "These books are more popular than a working droid on Tatooine. Expect the usual army of young Jedis to come out swinging for a copy." --Booklist
