Download or read book The Boundaries of the Criminal Law written by R.A. Duff and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book of a series on criminalization - examining the principles and goals that should guide what kinds of conduct are to be criminalized, and the forms that criminalization should take. The first volume studies the scope and boundaries of the criminal law - asking what principled limits might be placed on criminalizing behaviour.
Download or read book Autonomic Computing and Communications Systems written by Athanasios V. Vasilakos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain the papers presented at the Third International ICST C- ference on Autonomic Computing and Communication Systems, Autonomics 2009, held at the Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol, Cyprus, during September 9–11, 2009. As for the previous editions of the conference, this year too the primary goal of the event was to allow people working in the areas of communication, design, progr- ming, use and fundamental limits of autonomics pervasive systems to meet and - change their ideas and experiences in the aforementioned issues. In maintaining the tradition of excellence of Autonomics, this year we accepted 11 high-quality papers out of 26 submitted and had 5 invited talks, covering various aspects of autonomic computing including applications, middleware, networking protocols, and evaluation. The wide interest in the autonomic systems is shown by the broad range of topics covered in the papers presented at the conference. All papers presented at the conf- ence are published here and some of them, which are considered particularly intere- ing, will be considered for publication in a special issue of the International Journal of Autonomics and Adaptive Communications Systems (IJAACS). The conference also hosted the First International Workshop on Agent-Based Social Simulation and Au- nomic Systems (ABSS@AS).
Download or read book Ion Channels and Plant Stress Responses written by Vadim Demidchik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants live in a constantly changing environment from which they cannot physically escape. Plants therefore need signalling and response mechanisms to adapt to new local conditions. The ef?cacy of such mechanisms underlies the plant performance during stress and therefore also impacts greatly on agricultural productivity. M- ulation of ion channel activity not only provides a means for rapid signal generation 2+ but also allows adjustment of cellular physiology. For example, Ca permeable ion 2+ channels can transduce environmental stimuli into Ca -encoded messages which can modify the gene expression. Furthermore, ion channel activity is essential to control cellular ion homeostasis that impacts on plant responses to drought, salinity, pathogens, nutrient de?ciency, heavy metals, xenobiotics and other stresses. This volume focuses on the crucial roles of different types of ion channel in plant stress responses. Functions of ion channels are discussed in the context of mechanisms to relay external and endogenous signals during stress and as mechanisms to regulate cellular ion homeostasis and enzymatic activities in the context of biotic and abiotic stress. The chapters presented cover cation and anion channels located in various cellular compartments and tissues.
Download or read book Structures and Organelles in Pathogenic Protists written by W. de Souza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parasitic protozoa, including some which are agents of human and veterinary diseases, display special cytoplasmic structures and organelles. Metabolic pathways have been discovered in these organelles which open up new possibilities for drug targets. This work presents reviews dealing with cytoskeletal structures such as the mastigont system found in trichomonads, the sub-pellicular microtubules in trypanosomatids and the paraflagellar rod. Further chapters cover structures involved in the synthesis, secretion and uptake of molecules, including the flagellar pocket of trypanosomatids, the reservosome of Trypanosoma and the megasome found in Leishmania, the traffic of vesicles in Entamoeba histolytica, secretory organelles and the secretory events of intestinal parasites during encystation. Reviews on special organelles, such as the kinetoplast-mitochondrion complex, the apicoplast found in Apicomplexa, the glycosomes in Kinetoplastida and the acidocalcisomes found in several protozoa complete the volume.
Download or read book Extreme Statistics in Nanoscale Memory Design written by Amith Singhee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge exists: you only have to ?nd it VLSI design has come to an important in?ection point with the appearance of large manufacturing variations as semiconductor technology has moved to 45 nm feature sizes and below. If we ignore the random variations in the manufacturing process, simulation-based design essentially becomes useless, since its predictions will be far from the reality of manufactured ICs. On the other hand, using design margins based on some traditional notion of worst-case scenarios can force us to sacri?ce too much in terms of power consumption or manufacturing cost, to the extent of making the design goals even infeasible. We absolutely need to explicitly account for the statistics of this random variability, to have design margins that are accurate so that we can ?nd the optimum balance between yield loss and design cost. This discontinuity in design processes has led many researchers to develop effective methods of statistical design, where the designer can simulate not just the behavior of the nominal design, but the expected statistics of the behavior in manufactured ICs. Memory circuits tend to be the hardest hit by the problem of these random variations because of their high replication count on any single chip, which demands a very high statistical quality from the product. Book excerpt: The remit of the Open Museum, to take objects out into the community and work with those who might not otherwise visit a traditional museum, is revealed here, as the museum celebrates its first 20 years of existence. Sampling some of the projects that have contributed to its success, the passion of the staff and project participants is the focus of this fabulously illustrated book. It offers insights into the thinking behind the museum, and reveals the many challenges which were overcome along the way.

This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the recent work of an international group of 46 brachiopodologists from 19 countries. Topics discussed in detail in this volume range from aspects of the early development, shell growth, and skeletal crystallography and nanostructure of brachiopods, to observations on the ecology of living and fossil species. Download or read book Legality and Legitimacy written by Samantha Ashenden and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question about the relation between legality and political legitimacy is both one of the basic questions of modern legal and political philosophy and one of the most important problems in theoretical sociology. This volume brings together the work of a number of internationally prominent legal theorists, political theorists, sociologists, historians and philosophers, all of whom have worked extensively on the conceptual analysis of law and power, in order to address and illuminate this central question of the social sciences. The primary objective of the book is to propose and elaborate paradigms that traverse conventional disciplinary boundaries, and to combine sociological and normative/deductive patterns of analysis in order both to capture the legitimatory foundations of modern societies and accurately to account for the transformation of the classical foundations of political legitimacy in recent decades. All chapters in the volume propose new and challenging paradigms for analyzing the legal sources of legitimate power both in the historical formation of modern societies and in the present. .
