Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Again war. Again sufferings, necessary to nobody, utterly uncalled for; again fraud; again the universal stupefaction and brutalization of men. Men who are separated from each other by thousands of miles, hundreds of thousands of such men (on the one hand-Buddhists, whose law forbids the killing, not only of men, but of animals; on the other hand-Christians, professing the law of brotherhood and love) like wild beasts on land and on sea are seeking out each other, in order to kill, torture, and mutilate each other in the most cruel way. What can this be? Is it a dream or a reality? Something is taking place which should not, cannot be; one longs to believe that it is a dream and to awake from it. But no, it is not a dream, it is a dreadful reality! One could yet understand how a poor, uneducated, defrauded Japanese, torn from his field and taught that Buddhism consists not in compassion to all that lives, but in sacrifices to idols, and how a similar poor illiterate fellow from the neighborhood of Toula or Nijni Novgorod, who has been taught that Christianity consists in worshipping Christ, the Madonna, Saints, and their ikons-

ABOUT THE BOOK: Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) commonly referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer - novelist, essayist, dramatist and philosopher - as well as pacifist Christian anarchist and educational reformer. He was the most influential member of the aristocratic Tolstoy family. His first publications were three autobiographical novels, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856). They tell of a rich landowner's son and his slow realization of the differences between him and his peasants. As a fiction writer Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, particularly noted for his masterpieces War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). In their scope, breadth and realistic depiction of 19th-century Russian life, the two books stand at the peak of realist fiction. As a moral philosopher Tolstoy was notable for his ideas on nonviolent resistance through works such as The Kingdom of God is Within You (1894). ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; most appropriately used Liev Tolstoy; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Book excerpt: "Bethink Yourselves!" is a philosophical and political essay written by the famous Russian author and philosopher Leo Tolstoy. This work was published in 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War, at a time of great social and political upheaval in Russia. In this essay, Tolstoy addresses the moral and ethical implications of war and violence, and he encourages his fellow Russians to reflect on their actions and choices in the midst of this conflict. The central message of "Bethink Yourselves!" is a call for individual and collective introspection. Tolstoy argues that war is a result of a collective failure of conscience and humanity. He criticizes the idea of patriotism and nationalism as contributing to the cycle of violence, and he emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility and nonviolent resistance as a means to achieve peace and social justice. Tolstoy's writing in this essay is deeply reflective and philosophical, and he draws upon his Christian beliefs and principles of nonresistance to evil. He believes that individuals have the power to change the course of history by rejecting violence and embracing love, forgiveness, and nonviolent resistance. "Bethink Yourselves!" had a significant impact on the pacifist and nonviolent movements of the 20th century, and it resonated with many who sought alternatives to war and conflict. Tolstoy's ideas in this essay are not limited to a specific time or place, as they address universal questions about the nature of violence, the role of the individual in society, and the pursuit of peace. Overall, "Bethink Yourselves!" is a thought-provoking and morally charged essay that reflects Leo Tolstoy's commitment to peace and his critique of the destructive forces of war and nationalism. It remains an important work in the history of nonviolent resistance and ethical reflection on the consequences of violence.

Book excerpt: Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy was born on September 9th 1828 into Russian nobility but abandoned his title and through his interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus became a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. His writings on non-violence were to have a profound impact on Gandhi and Martin Luther King. His reputation for many people is based on the epic, in length and scope, of his novel 'War & Peace'. For that alone Tolstoy would be widely considered to be one of the greatest novelists of all time. But such was the breadth of his talents that he was consummate at short stories, essays and plays. Here we publish "Bethink Yourselves" one of a number of those classic plays that he wrote.

Book excerpt: ''Bethink Yourselves!'': Large Print By Leo Nikoleyevich Tolstoy ill at first be astonished at your question. He is a soldier, he has taken the oath, and it is his duty to fulfil the orders of his commanders. If you tell him that war--i.e. the slaughter of men--does not conform to the command, "Thou shalt not kill," he will say: "And how if ours are attacked--For the King--For the Orthodox faith?" (One of them said in answer to my question: "And how if he attacks that which is sacred?" "What do you mean?" I asked. "Why," said he, "the banner.") And if you endeavor to explain to such a soldier that God's Commandment is more important not only than the banner but than anything else in the world, he will become silent, or he will get angry and report you to the authorities.

Book excerpt: As Russia goes to war against Japan, Tolstoy urges those at all levels of society, from the Tsar down to the common soldier, to consider their actions in the light of Christ's teaching. "However strange this may appear, the most effective and certain deliverance of men from all the calamities which they inflict upon themselves and from the most dreadful of all-war-is attainable, not by any external general measures, but merely by that simple appeal to the consciousness of each separate man which, nineteen hundred years ago, was proposed by Jesus-that every man bethink himself, and ask himself, who is he, why he lives, and what he should and should not do."
