Book excerpt: This is one of three major Basel lectures he gave immediately after he accepted a position at the University of Basel. The original German title is "Socrates und die Tragödie". At the young age of 24, Nietzsche accepted a philology professorship in 1869, which facilitated his acquaintance with the composer residing in Tribschen. During this period, Nietzsche delivered three lectures that prefigured his future focus: 'The Greek Musical Drama' on January 18, 'Socrates and Tragedy' on February 1, and the 'The Dionysian Worldview' in July/August 1870. Feeling constrained by philological topics, Nietzsche sought a professorship in philosophy. His writing primarily reflects influences from two significant sources: the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and the musical and theoretical works of Richard Wagner. Socrates and Tragedy was given by the newly minted Professor Nietzsche at the Basel Museum held on February 1, 1870, and subsequently published but the foundation managed by his sister. This lecture was first published in the volume "Gesammelte Werke" edited by Peter Gast (a pseudonym for Heinrich Köselitz, a close associate of Nietzsche) and Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche (Nietzsche's sister). They were included in the second series of these collected works under the title "Philologica," which was published in 1897. This was part of the effort to compile and publish Nietzsche's unpublished manuscripts and lecture notes after his death. This new 2024 translation from the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. Matthew Meyer analyzes Nietzsche’s concepts of becoming and perspectivism and his alleged rejection of the principle of non-contradiction, and he traces these views back to the Heraclitean-Protagorean position that Plato and Aristotle critically analyze in the Theaetetus and Metaphysica IV, respectively. At the center of this Heraclitean-Protagorean position is a relational ontology in which everything exists and is what it is only in relation to something else. Meyer argues that this relational ontology is not only theoretically foundational for Nietzsche’s philosophical project, in that it is the common element in Nietzsche’s views on becoming, perspectivism, and the principle of non-contradiction, but also textually foundational, in that Nietzsche implicitly commits himself to such an ontology in raising the question of opposites at the beginning of both Human, All Too Human and Beyond Good and Evil.

The Birth of Tragedy was angrily criticized by many respected professional scholars of Greek literature. Particularly vehement was philologist Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, who denounced Nietzsche and 's work as slipshod and misleading. Prompted by Nietzsche, Erwin Rohde—a friend who had written a favorable review that sparked the first derogatory debate over the book—responded by exposing Wilamowitz-Moellendorf and 's inaccurate citations of Nietzsche and 's work. Richard Wagner also issued a response to Wilamowitz-Moellendorf and 's critique, but his action only served to characterize Nietzsche as the composer and 's lackey.
