Book excerpt: The tale of a ravishing young Brit whose falsely-reported death provides her with an opportunity to begin a new life. Before she can disappear for good, however, she longs to know the reaction of her two-timing husband and his aristocratic family. To find out, Lenore enlists Richard--an outsider in the money-and-booze sodden landscape of Nantucket high society--to be her eyes and ears. As events unfold, Richard discovers the entanglements of Lenore's relationships are more intricate than he ever expected ... more intricate even than the secrets within Lenore's miniature punt boat. First novel.
Download or read book Collected Poems of Lenore Kandel written by Lenore Kandel and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2012-04-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Kerouac immortalized her in his novel Big Sur. A student of Zen, she hung out with Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg and was a speaker at San Francisco’s Human Be-In. But Lenore Kandel was no muse or hanger-on; she was a brilliant lyric poet, often unabashedly erotic, and that’s where her legacy lies. Collected Poems of Lenore Kandel contains 80 examples of her art, from the “holy erotica” of her early years to later, more contemplative works. Many of the poems have never been published, others only in rare ephemeral publications. Some are explicit, celebrating carnal love as part of the divine. Others are humorous and cover more quotidian subjects. A recurring theme is the “divine animal” duality. The collection includes poems written from the early fifties up until Kandel’s death. The paradox of Lenore Kandel is that despite her prodigious talent, she was one of the least read and critically appreciated of modern poets. Kandel found her voice at a time when the Beat era was giving way to the countercultural age, and though she straddled both eras, it meant that she also fell through the cracks in terms of recognition. Now for the first time the full range of her work appears in one volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limnological research on saline lakes is practiced by a growing cadre of scientists active worldwide in a diversity of disciplines. Every three years since 1979, an international symposium on inland saline waters has served to strengthen and expand the scope of the studies. Promising areas for further research especially well suited to saline lakes include the comparative physiology of adaptation to osmotic stresses, the role of microbial and protozoan communities in nutrient dynamics and biotic interactions in ecosystems with few species. The Third International Symposium on Inland Saline Lakes was held at the University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae (SIL). The symposium was sponsored by and received financial or other support from the U.S. National Science Foundation (International Program), United Nations Environment Program, University of California, Santa Barbara, and University of Nairobi. The proceedings occurred for three days (28-31 August, 1985) and were attended by 33 scientists from 14 countries (see list of Participants). On the day prior to the first formal session an afternoon trip to Lake Magadi and salt works was held. The tribulations of this excursion served to acquaint the participants with each other and with the realities of exploring the African bush. A three day post-congress expedition to the rift valley included visits to spectacular saline lakes such as Nakuru and Bogoria. Much of the meeting's and excursion's success is owed to the efforts of the local organizer, Dr. Stephen G.

Can Lenore find the courage to forge her own path, or will the world of lies she's built come crashing down? Out of the Shadows, Into the Fire, and Across the Ice are the first three books in the captivating Broken Gears young adult steampunk fantasy series. Fans of the Finishing School series by Gail Carriger and Garth Nix's Old World universe will delight as this Victorian-era-esque world unfolds before them. A multi-layered steampunk fantasy tale of colorful characters, lost magic and technology, and subterfuge that promises to entrance. If you like smart heroines, forgotten magic, and rich Victorian settings, then you'll love Lenore's intrigue-and-adventure storyline. "Out of the Shadows features great prose, a gripping plot, and characters that will remain with readers long after they are done reading the story." —Reader's Favorite Editorial Review: "Dana Fraedrich has a vast eye for details and a flawless knack with complex relationships. This world is primarily steampunk, but traces of fantasy and paranormal are in the background, staying in the shadows as these characters are forced to hide certain aspects of their lives. Lenore is often judged for her status, age, and for being a woman, but she doesn't let the world define her. She uses it to create a mask to hide behind, but this doesn't take away from her brazen, opinionated, and spunky personality. Into the Fire is a riveting adventure that will hook you from page one, with a strong-willed heroine, complex characters, romance, and complicated relationships."
