Book excerpt: Chiefly, a collection of diary entries, speeches, and a biographical sketch of the life of Dr. James Theodore Reeve who was born on 26 April 26, 1834 in Walkil, near Goshen, Orange County, New York. He was the son of Daniel and Mary Valentine Reeve. On November 26, 1857 he married Laura Spofford. She was the daughter of Uriah Gage Spofford and Mary Perkins. James and Laura had six children. James served as Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon, Brigade Surgeon, and Chief Surgeon of a Division during the U.S. Civil War, from September 18, 1861 to June 8, 1865. He served in the 10th and 21st Regiments in the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was also in prison for several months in Richmond, Virginia in 1863. After the Civil War, he relocated to Appleton, Wisconsin and started a family practice. Over the years, he served on many boards of local institutions, and made many generous contributions to the community. He died on November 6, 1906 and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Joseph Soper (d.1678) immigrated from England to Boston, Massachusetts about 1634/1636, and married Eliza- beth Alcocke (Governor John Endicott performed the marriage cere- mony). John Soper (ca.1656-1742/1743) immigrated about 1676 from England to Calvert County, Maryland. Some of the New York Sopers later immigrated to Quebec, Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Descen- dants and relatives (chiefly of Henry, with some of Joseph and John) lived in New York, Maryland, New England, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, California and elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Johann Conrad Menges (ca. 1730-1813) was born in Germany and immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1749. The identity of his first wife is unknown; he married Anna Catharina Bechtel (died 1780/81), a daughter of Peter and Anna Mareretha Bechtel, in 1764. They had eight children. His third wife was named Anna Maria; they married in 1782/83 and had four children. Most descendants live in Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, and Ohio. Spelling of the surname varies.
