Drei J ahren die Aufforderung an mich ergieng, einen Grundriss der Einleitung in das Alte Testament zu schreiben, da musste ich mir auf Grund meiner eigenen Erfahrung gestehn, dass zu einem solchen ein wirkliches Bedurfniss vorliege: die vor handenen Darstellungen der Disciplin sind entweder zu umfang reich, so dass sie den Studierenden durch die Fülle des gebotenen Stofl'es verwirren und erdrücken, oder zu kurz, so dass sie wohl positive Daten zum Einprägen geben, aber den Studierenden nicht in die Forschung selbst einführen. Trotzdem habe ich zuerst ent 'schieden abgelehnt, weil ich dadurch für J ahre von den Studien abgedrangt werden wurde, in welchen ich die eigentliche Aufgabe meines Lebens erkannt habe. Nun aber die Arbeit gethan ist, bin ich dankbar, dass man mich nicht losliess: ich habe sie wenigstens mit stets wachsender Lust und Liebe gethan, und hoffe, man merkt ihr dies auch an. Mein Bestreben gieng dahin, die richtige Mitte zwischen Ausführlichkeit und Knappheit zu trefl'en und vor allem dem Studierenden niemals blosse Resultate zu geben, sondern ihn in die Forschung selbst einzuführen. Wenn auch bisweilen nur andeutend, so sind doch immer die Gründe für jede Ansetzung und jedes Urtheil gegeben und so ein N ach prufen' ermoglicht, nicht gedankenloses Nachsprechen oder gar mechanisches Auswendiglernen gefordert und gefördert. Man wird für einen Grundriss die 55 2 und 6 zu ausführlich finden. Aber ich bin dem Herrn Verleger zu ganz besonderem Danke verpflichtet, dass er dieselben unverkürzt abgedruckt hat. Nach meinen wiederholt gemachten Erfahrungen werden gerade solche historische Ausführungen, wenn sie mehr bieten, als ein blosses Gewine von Namen, Büchertiteln und J ahreszahlen, von den Studierenden mit besonderem Interesse verfolgt, und so durfte ich schon meinem literar-historischen Tic, den ich wie hupfeld zu besitzen glaube, ein wenig die Zuge] schiessen lassen. Dabei greift das auslaufende 19. Jahrhundert auf das 20. Jahrhundert aus.
