Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the shockingly high prices of prescription drugs continue to dominate the news, the strategies used by pharmaceutical companies to prevent generic competition are poorly understood, even by the lawmakers responsible for regulating them. In this groundbreaking work, Robin Feldman and Evan Frondorf illuminate the inner workings of the pharmaceutical market and show how drug companies twist health policy to achieve goals contrary to the public interest. In highly engaging prose, they offer specific examples of how generic competition has been stifled for years, with costs climbing into the billions and everyday consumers paying the price. Drug Wars is a guide to the current landscape, a roadmap for reform, and a warning of what is to come. It should be read by policymakers, academics, patients, and anyone else concerned with the soaring costs of prescription drugs.

Book Enhancing the Regulatory Decision Making Approval Process for Direct Food Ingredient Technologies

Download or read book Enhancing the Regulatory Decision Making Approval Process for Direct Food Ingredient Technologies written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Food Forum was established in 1993 to allow science and technology leaders in the food industry, top administrators in the federal government, representatives from consumer interest groups, and academicians to discuss and debate food and food safety issues openly and in a neutral setting. The Forum provides a mechanism for these diverse groups to identify possible approaches for addressing food and food safety problems and issues surrounding the often complex interactions among industry, academia, regulatory agencies, and consumers. On May 6-7, 1997, the Forum convened a workshop titled Enhancing the Regulatory Decision-Making Process for Direct Food Ingredient Technologies. Workshop speakers and participants discussed legal aspects of the direct food additive approval process, changes in science and technology, and opportunities for reform. Two background papers, which can be found in Appendix A and B, were shared with the participants prior to the workshop. The first paper provided a description and history of the legal framework of the food ingredient approval process and the second paper focused on changes in science and technology practices with emphasis placed on lessons learned from case studies. This document presents a summary of the workshop.

Understanding Health Outcomes and Pharmacoeconomics provides definitions of comparative effectiveness research (CER) and comparisons of pharmacoeconomic models (including cost-effectivess, cost-benefit, and cost utility analyses). This inclusive text provides describes how CER is linked to various pharmacoeconomic models by providing examples from clinical trials with comparative pharmacotherapy and cost parameters. From the Introduction: "The need for interprofessional education was made apparent in the 2003 Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality report. All healthcare professionals must be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interprofessional team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvement approaches, and informatics. An enhanced understanding of pharmacoeconomic principles is a step in the right direction for healthcare practitioners as we do our best to ensure optimal medication therapy outcomes for patients and society at-large." -- George E. Book Development and Formulation of Veterinary Dosage Forms

Download or read book Development and Formulation of Veterinary Dosage Forms written by Gregory E. Hardee and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States (U.S.) and the more developed nations of the remainder of the world are blessed with a variety of pharmaceuticals, feed additives, and biological products to treat, prevent, and control animal diseases, there is a healthy desire among persons involved in animal health issues to increase our animal medicine chest. The interest stems from the desire to efficiently produce food that is safe and plentiful and from the desire to have more and better government-approved products available for the prevention and treatment of diseases of dogs, cats, and horses and for an increasing variety of minor animal species. For the animal health industry, increased drug availability means broader markets, increased revenues, and an opportunity to better serve their customers. For the veterinarian, more animal health products means that he or she is better able to treat the usual and the unusual conditions, and to prevent animal disease and suffering. No doubt, we are all winners when new technology and industrial and regulatory initiatives hasten the availability of safe and effective animal health products.
