This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.
Download or read book Protect Yourself from Legionnaires Disease written by Matthew R. Freije and published by . This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tens of thousands of people contract Legionnaires' disease each year, 5 to 30% of whom die from it within a few days. You can get the disease while showering, brushing your teeth, drinking water, washing your face, bathing in a hot tub, or walking by a decorative fountain. Legionnaires' disease is not rare. People just think it's rare because over 90% of the cases go undetected. Many deaths attributed to pneumonia are actually caused by Legionella bacteria. In simple language, Legionella expert Matt Freije explains how to avoid the disease in public places-for example, in hospitals, office buildings, and hotels-and how to reduce your risk at work, at the dentist, and from various types of equipment like misters, cooling towers, decorative fountains, hot tubs, and whirlpool bathtubs. The book starts with facts you need to know about Legionnaires' disease: causes, symptoms, susceptibility, death rate, diagnosis, undetected cases. The survivor stories in chapter 2 will make you realize how horrible the disease is, and that it can affect anyone. The last chapter tells how to avoid the disease at home. Advice is given about faucets and showers, water heaters, softeners, filters, humidifiers, and home construction.

They are designed to be used by the responsible person to audit arrangements in place in premises to control legionella in water systems. The checklists are intended to audit the risk assessment process and take the responsible person through the recommended measures in the Approved Code of Practice and guidance on the control of legionella bacteria in water systems, so they can audit the arrangements in place. They do not give guidance but are intended to supplement the guidance available. A copy of the checklists will accompany the video. They are also available in priced packs.
Download or read book Environmental Medicine written by Committee on Curriculum Development in Environmental Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-05-12 with total page 988 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are increasingly concerned about potential environmental health hazards and often ask their physicians questions such as: "Is the tap water safe to drink?" "Is it safe to live near power lines?" Unfortunately, physicians often lack the information and training related to environmental health risks needed to answer such questions. This book discusses six competency based learning objectives for all medical school students, discusses the relevance of environmental health to specific courses and clerkships, and demonstrates how to integrate environmental health into the curriculum through published case studies, some of which are included in one of the book's three appendices. Also included is a guide on where to obtain additional information for treatment, referral, and follow-up for diseases with possible environmental and/or occupational origins.
Download or read book Legionella written by James M. Barbaree and published by ASM Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from ASM′s 1992 symposium on the subject, this book completely updates information on all aspects of Legionella and Legionnaires disease. Strategy sessions held at the symposium to address current issues involving preventive measures to minimize the presence of Legionella and occurence of Legionnaires disease, the evolution of chemotherapy and diagnostic tests, and prospects for vaccine development are summarized. Legionella is required reading for anyone working in this area of infectious disease. As the sole source of current knowledge and theory on Legionella, it is an extremely useful reference for clinical microbiologists, environmental microbiologists, epidemiologists, infectious disease and other clinical specialists, and environmental engineers.

Download or read book Suggestible You written by Erik Vance and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Geographic's riveting narrative explores the world of placebos, hypnosis, false memories, and neurology to reveal the groundbreaking science of our suggestible minds. Could the secrets to personal health lie within our own brains? Journalist Erik Vance explores the surprising ways our expectations and beliefs influence our bodily responses to pain, disease, and everyday events. Drawing on centuries of research and interviews with leading experts in the field, Vance takes us on a fascinating adventure from Harvard's research labs to a witch doctor's office in Catemaco, Mexico, to an alternative medicine school near Beijing (often called "China's Hogwarts"). Vance's firsthand dispatches will change the way you think--and feel. Expectations, beliefs, and self-deception can actively change our bodies and minds. Vance builds a case for our "internal pharmacy"--the very real chemical reactions our brains produce when we think we are experiencing pain or healing, actual or perceived. Supporting this idea is centuries of placebo research in a range of forms, from sugar pills to shock waves; studies of alternative medicine techniques heralded and condemned in different parts of the world (think crystals and chakras); and most recently, major advances in brain mapping technology. Thanks to this technology, we're learning how we might leverage our suggestibility (or lack thereof) for personalized medicine, and Vance brings us to the front lines of such study.

Download or read book The Pandemic Century written by Mark Honigsbaum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like sharks, epidemic diseases always lurk just beneath the surface. This fast-paced history of their effect on mankind prompts questions about the limits of scientific knowledge, the dangers of medical hubris, and how we should prepare as epidemics become ever more frequent. Ever since the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic, scientists have dreamed of preventing catastrophic outbreaks of infectious disease. Yet, despite a century of medical progress, viral and bacterial disasters continue to take us by surprise, inciting panic and dominating news cycles. From the Spanish flu and the 1924 outbreak of pneumonic plague in Los Angeles to the 1930 'parrot fever' pandemic and the more recent SARS, Ebola, and Zika epidemics, the last 100 years have been marked by a succession of unanticipated pandemic alarms. Like man-eating sharks, predatory pathogens are always present in nature, waiting to strike; when one is seemingly vanquished, others appear in its place. These pandemics remind us of the limits of scientific knowledge, as well as the role that human behaviour and technologies play in the emergence and spread of microbial diseases.

Book excerpt: Legionellosis is a disease of significant medical and public interest. Legionella is commonly found in aquatic habitats where its ability to survive and to multiply within different protozoa equips the bacterium to be transmissible and pathogenic to humans. In addition Legionella has become a favored model system to analyse the mechanisms of bacterial survival, acquisition of nutrients and intracellular replication. Following the recent publication of the genome sequences of four L. pneumophila strains it is now feasible to investigate the whole genome in silico, the transcriptome via micro ar.
