Book Legends of the Ozarks Classic Reprint

Download or read book Legends of the Ozarks Classic Reprint written by J. W. Buel and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends of the Ozarks But a few years will elapse when the wild, untutored fathers of America will have departed forever; the last generation of the Red Man will disappear like shadows before the zenith flash of Caucasian civilization, and only their wierd traditions and bright-fancied legends will remain to remind the white man of the primeval settlers of the greatest Republic that floats a banner 'neath the stars. The beautiful imagery and day dreams of the savage, the paradise of his hopes, the ambition of his unexampled nature, the love which he never otherwise exhibited, and the superstitions which the wild and lonesome forests created in him, are worthy of perpetuation. They serve to soften the aspersions cast upon the Indians character and ennoble a nature which, in the eyes of the progressive and unsympathetic white man, is pronounced immovable and destitute of moral instincts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Take to the Hills: A Chronicle of the Ozarks Your answer to that question, I am sure, is yes! In fact, the Jedge and I have come to believe that America is made up of two classes of people, those who want a big farm, and those who want just any kind of a farm. Throughout the five years that we have owned Sunrise Mountain Farm, we have been amazed at the number of people who had a farm urge! The butcher, baker, doorman, window-washer, banker, taxi-driver... all had that yearning for a place in the country. Their reasons for wanting a farm gave us endless amusement: A place to putter with flowers. Nearer to a golf course. More space for the children to play. A place to keep a dog. Better air! Fresh eggs. We had to answer the oddest questions, too. Did we have movies near us? Could we get good help? Did we have electricity? Were the roads good? It seemed to us that everyone wanted a farm without foregoing any of the urban luxuries. Suddenly, within the past year, these questions have taken a more serious turn! With the world rocking on its heels, with the very air filled with talk of decentralizing population, rumors of mysterious attacks, and vague internal and international complications, people seem to be turning to Mother Earth as the only real, substantial thing left to humanity. Book The Summit of the Ozarks Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Summit of the Ozarks Classic Reprint written by John W. Kearney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Summit of the Ozarks The Ozarks are too high to'be called hills; yet scarcely lofty enough to be termed mountains, when compared with the stupendous peaks of the Rockies. The top of Crescent Mountain, where the Crescent Hotel stands, the very sum mit of the Ozark Range, is not quite feet above the sea level. There is little of the rugged grandeur of the stony peaks of the Rocky Mountains about the Ozarks they rather partake of the more quiet beauty of the ver dure-covered Alps which have given to Switzerland its reputation as the scenic country of the world. Yet the soft, velvety surface of these eminences of the Ozarks is frequently broken by stern cliffs which rise to the height of several hundred feet and add variety and charm to the imposing landscape, which never fails to enrapture visitors. Eureka Springs, as the settlement itself is known, recalls strongly the quaint Alpine villages 01 Switzerland, about which so much has been written. It is a town of some permanent residents. For a large part of the year, however, its population 18 enhanced by throngs of visitors, it being estimated that persons from other parts of the country go there annually in search of health and pleasure. Ponce de Leon sought in vain for a fountain of perpetual youth. In this Ozark Range he could have found a country of perpetual fountains. Springs, as incessant as the strides of time, gush forth from the sides of hills at almost every hundred yards and commingle in the gulches to form softly-murmuring brooks, whose clear, crystal-like waters suddenly disappear into the earth, every here and there, only to reappear a few hundred yards farther on, rushing over gravel beds in their eager haste to join some river and make their Way with it to the broad bosom of the restless ocean. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jean Carroll: A Tale of the the Ozark Hills States, until they could stand the loss no longer, but sought better fields in the unsettled lands of the Ozarks. Here, among the beautiful hills, with game of all kinds in abundance, they established their homes. These settlers came of a hardy, independent race, were used to the hardships of pioneer life, and in a few years had established many thrifty homes. These homes were generally located near one of the numerous springs of the country. Here, with an abundance of timber and water at hand, the set tler erected a substantial, if rough, dwelling, cleared up a small field for corn and cotton, and lived a life of pleasure and adventure, for which his habits and training had well fitted him. His possessions were his claim, a few cows and hogs, perhaps one horse, and last, but not least, his gun and dog.
