Book Finding Jack Dyer

Download or read book Finding Jack Dyer written by Tony Hardy and published by Slattery Media Group. This book was released on 2013 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 15, fans of Australian football will celebrate the 100th birthday of the most famous Tiger of all time--Jack 'Captain Blood' Dyer. Ten years since his death, the real story of the renowned Tiger hardman has not been told in any detail, other than in caricature and hype, much of it promoted by the man himself during his illustrious media career. We know he was a football hero during the Depression era and WWII eras, a premiership player, coach and enforcer who by the end of his 312-game career had broken 64 collarbones (well, so he said). We also know he was a master of brutalising the English language and one of football's first TV, print and radio celebrities.

Book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19

Download or read book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19 written by Melanie Nolan and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) contains concise biographies of individuals who died between 1991 and 1995. The first of two volumes for the 1990s, it presents a colourful montage of late twentieth-century Australian life, containing the biographies of significant and representative Australians. The volume is still in the shadow of World War II with servicemen and women who enlisted young appearing, but these influences are dimming and there are now increasing numbers of non-white, non-male, non-privileged and non-straight subjects. The 680 individuals recorded in volume 19 of the ADB include Wiradjuri midwife and Ngunnawal Elder Violet Bulger; Aboriginal rights activist, poet, playwright and artist Kevin Gilbert; and Torres Strait Islander community leader and land rights campaigner Eddie Mabo. HIV/AIDS child activists Tony Lovegrove and Eve Van Grafhorst have entries, as does conductor Stuart Challender, ‘the first Australian celebrity to go public’ about his HIV/AIDS condition in 1991. The arts are, as always, well-represented, including writers Frank Hardy, Mary Durack and Nene Gare, actors Frank Thring and Leonard Teale and arts patron Ian Potter. We are beginning to see the effects of the steep rise in postwar immigration flow through to the ADB. Artist Joseph Stanislaw Ostoja-Kotkowski was born in Poland. Pilar Moreno de Otaegui, co-founded the Spanish Club of Sydney. Chinese restaurateur and community leader Ming Poon (Dick) Low migrated to Victoria in 1953. Often we have a dearth of information about the domestic lives of our subjects; politician Olive Zakharov, however, bravely disclosed at the Victorian launch of the federal government’s campaign to Stop Violence Against Women in 1993 that she was a survivor of domestic violence in her second marriage. Take a dip into the many fascinating lives of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.

To coincide with the unveiling of the latest statue in the Australia Post Avenue of Legends at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, here is Coleman - the Untold Story of an AFL Legend. Book Fabulous Fred

Download or read book Fabulous Fred written by Paul Amy and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred Cook is one of the great Melbourne stories that combines the life of a true legend of football with exploits of true crime! Fred was a champion footballer who started his career with Footscray in the VFL and then went to Port Melbourne where, in the 1970s he enjoyed fame akin to a pop star. He was on TV, radio and wrote newspapers columns, and was (and still is) best pals with Sam Newman. But he fell in with a bad crowd (Dennis Allen and the Pettingills, no less), formed a drug habit, lost everything and did three spells in prison. Cook has led a remarkable life, going from hero to zero in three years. He's always wanted to tell his story, which has elements of football, crime and drugs and the wider issue of sportsmen and women who struggle with life once their careers have ended. Fred Cook's name still resonates with many football fans, 30 years after his career finished. In fact, last year he was nominated for the Australian football hall of fame.

Book excerpt: Norm Smith is arguably the greatest Australian Football coach in history. Smith - who, in 1996, was selected as the coach of the Australian Football League's Team of the Century - led the Melbourne Demons to a staggering six premierships from 1955 to 1964. When it came to football, he was a hard man, brutally honest to his players and an utterly ruthless and fearsome disciplinarian, but this was offset by a gentler, charitable side of his nature which was rarely seen in public. This is his story, and secondarily that of his older brother and fellow coach Len Smith, from their childhood in tough, working-class Northcote during the Depression; Norm as a childhood supporter of Collingwood, the club he would conquer many times over as a man; through his distinguished playing career at Melbourne where he built a reputation as the most unselfish player in the game; his first coaching job at Fitzroy; his triumphant reign at Melbourne, detailing his relationship with his ‘foster son' Ron Barassi, his friendly coaching rivalry with his brother, and his controversial sacking and reinstatement in 1965; to his last coaching job at South Melbourne, which in 1970 he lifted to its first finals series in 25 years, and culminating in his premature death at the age of 57
