The maximum notorious specter with inside the Hollow is the Headless Horseman, supposedly the ghost of a Hessian trooper whose head has been shot off through a stray cannonball during "a few anonymous struggle" of the Revolution, and who "rides forth to the scene of struggle in nightly quest of his head". The "Legend" relates the story of Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky, and extraordinarily superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Broom Bones" Van Brunt, the metropolis rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-vintage Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole toddler of wealthy farmer Balta's Van Tassel. Ichabod Crane, a Yankee and an outsider, sees marriage to Katrina as a way of purchasing Van Tassels extravagant wealth. Bones, the nearby hero, not able to pressure Ichabod into a bodily showdown to settle things, performs a chain of pranks on the superstitious schoolmaster. In a frenzied race to the bridge adjoining to the Old Dutch Burying Ground, wherein the Hessian is stated to "vanish, in line with the rule, in a flash of hearth place and brimstone" earlier than crossing it, Ichabod rides for his life, desperately goading Gunpowder down the Hollow. However, even as Crane and Gunpowder are capable of pass the bridge beforehand of the ghoul, Ichabod turns lower back in horror to look at the monster rears his horse, and hurl his severed head immediately at him with a fierce motion. The schoolmaster tries to dodge, however is simply too late; the missile moves his head and sends him tumbling headlong into the dirt from his horse.
