The story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman is one of America's best-known fables, but what other stories does the Hudson Valley hold? Imps cause mischief on the Hudson River, a white lady haunts Raven Rock, Major Andre’s ghost seeks redemption and real headless Hessians search for their severed skulls. These mysterious and spooky tales from the region’s past inspired Irving and continue to captivate the imagination to this day. “Kruk has been enchanting audiences with his dramatic, enticing storytelling ability for 20 years.” —Suzanne Rothberg, Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow Patch

Book The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Download or read book The Legend of Sleepy Hollow written by Washington Irving and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving Ichabod Crane is a newcomer to the Hudson Valley. Unlike many generations of Dutch settlers before him, he had neither the strength nor the means to become a farmer and landowner. His only marketing skill was teaching, and in the small village of Sleepy Hollow, this paid off very little. His school was dilapidated, one large room built of timber. Its broken windows are fixed with the leaves of an old copybook, Ichabod's room is the room that a nearby Dutch farmer who raised him for a week each time was happy to provide it, so Ichabod went round. Of the neighborhood and his small salary, combined with a constantly changing address, allows him to keep all his personal belongings in a cotton handkerchief. Since he came from Connecticut, a state whose main product is the teacher of the country, Ichabod felt both above the Dutch valley merchandise and frustrated by his perennial state of poverty. He compensated the past by regularly forcing his petty charges to become more stubborn and the latter by working light on a nearby farm. He added income by serving as a local singer, teaching the farm kids to sing psalms. Never miss out on a chance to have curry with a local mother, Ichabod is always raising the youngest child. In short, his only goal is self-progression, and even if he "waits" in Sleepy Hollow, he will certainly remain there if his chances improve. Ichabod could not rely on his appearance or strength to develop him, so he cultivated a group of peasant daughters, especially from wealthier families, and impressed them with his superior curiosity and taste. He has "read many books" among them, a story about Cotton Mather's spell in New England. He believed even the strangest of these tales. In fact, he was so scared of himself reading them, and he was startled when he heard birds or saw fireflies. In other words, he is completely naive and direct. The local story of Galloping Hessian riding headless through Sleepy Hollow Forest especially woke him up. The snow-covered bush in the half-light was enough to convince Ichabod that he had seen a headless horseman. One of Ichabod's music students is Katrina Van Tassel, the eighteen-year-old daughter of a prosperous Dutch farmer. She "plump like a quail. Ripe and melting and blushing like your father's peach. "She, as her father's only daughter, has "Many expectations" even though she is a womanizer. But her legacy expectations made her look like Ichabod was a desirable bride, and he decided to win her over. Ichabod's mouth water When he recalled the fruit of the ancient land of Baltus Van Tassel, he dreamed of fertile pastures, fertile wheat fields, rye, buckwheat, fruit and Indian corn, which would be his if. He can win Katrina's hand. Once married to Katrina, he can invest in a large piece of land. He can imagine Katrina with his whole family, setting off with him in promising new lands in Kentucky or Tennessee. However, the home's opulent comforts of Van Tassel made him know that Katrina had to be.
