Download or read book A Trucker s Tale written by Ed Miller and published by Apollo Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wit, wisdom, adventure, and revelations from sixty years on the road. They say that only truck drivers experience the true grandeur and landscape of America: the winding mountainsides at sunrise, the first frosts of winter descending on apple orchards, the call of the rising roosters. In A Trucker's Tale, Ed Miller gives an inside look at the allure of the work and the colorful characters who haul our goods on the open road. He shares what it was like to grow up in a boisterous trucking family, his experience as an equipment officer in Vietnam, the wide range of vehicles he's mounted, and the daily trials, tribulations, risks, and exploits that define life as a trucker. Ed's vibrant, no-holds-barred tales are hilarious and heartwarming, sometimes cringeworthy or unbelievable—recollections of heroic feels as well as the “fishing stories” that have stretched and shifted from CB radio to CB radio. Many are the results of what he calls, “just plain stupidity.” Others bring to light the small acts of kindness and grand gestures that these Knights of the Highway perform each day, as well as the safety risks and continual danger that these essential workers endure. Together they paint a compelling portrait of one of the most important, but least-known industries, and reveal why Ed, and so many like him, just kept on truckin’.

Book excerpt: "The share auto I squeeze into next seems unusually vulnerable after a night in the truck - too compact, too low down. Perhaps, these are the usual side effects of prolonged riding with the king of the road, I think to myself. But it is only when I fill in ‘truck’ as my mode of transportation in the hotel ledger at Udaipur does the utter ludicrousness of my endeavour truly hit home" Think truck drivers, and movie scenes of them drunkenly crushing inconvenient people to their gravelly deaths come to mind. But what are their lives on the road actually like? In Truck De India!, journalist Rajat Ubhaykar embarks on a 10,000 km-long, 100% unplanned trip, hitchhiking with truckers all across India. On the way, he makes unexpected friendships; listens to highway ghost stories; discovers the near-fatal consequences of overloading trucks; documents the fascinating tradition of truck art in Punjab; travels alongside nomadic shepherds in Kashmir; encounters endemic corruption repeatedly; survives NH39, the insurgent-ridden highway through Nagaland and Manipur; and is unfailingly greeted by the unconditional kindness of perfect strangers. Imbued with humour, empathy, and a keen sense of history, Truck De India! is a travelogue like no other you've read. It is the story of India, and Indians, on the road.

Book Where the Devil Don t Stay

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Deusner
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2021-09-07
  • ISBN : 1477323937
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Where the Devil Don t Stay written by Stephen Deusner and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, Patterson Hood recruited friends and fellow musicians in Athens, Georgia, to form his dream band: a group with no set lineup that specialized in rowdy rock and roll. The Drive-By Truckers, as they named themselves, grew into one of the best and most consequential rock bands of the twenty-first century, a great live act whose songs deliver the truth and nuance rarely bestowed on Southerners, so often reduced to stereotypes. Where the Devil Don’t Stay tells the band’s unlikely story not chronologically but geographically. Seeing the Truckers’ albums as roadmaps through a landscape that is half-real, half-imagined, their fellow Southerner Stephen Deusner travels to the places the band’s members have lived in and written about. Tracking the band from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to Richmond, Virginia, to the author’s hometown in McNairy County, Tennessee, Deusner explores the Truckers’ complex relationship to the South and the issues of class, race, history, and religion that run through their music. Drawing on new interviews with past and present band members, including Jason Isbell, Where the Devil Don’t Stay is more than the story of a great American band; it’s a reflection on the power of music and how it can frame and shape a larger culture.

Book My Life Is a Weapon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christoph Reuter
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2006-04-24
  • ISBN : 0691126151
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book My Life Is a Weapon written by Christoph Reuter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-24 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kind of people are suicide bombers? How do they justify their actions? In this meticulously researched and sensitively written book, journalist Christoph Reuter argues that popular views of these young men and women--as crazed fanatics or brainwashed automatons--fall short of the mark. In many cases these modern-day martyrs are well-educated young adults who turn themselves into human bombs willingly and eagerly--to exact revenge on a more powerful enemy, perceived as both unjust and oppressive. Suicide assassins are determined to make a difference, for once in their lives, no matter what the cost. As Reuter's many interviews with would-be martyrs, their trainers, friends, and relatives reveal, the bombers are motivated more by how they expect to be remembered--as heroic figures--than by religion-infused visions of a blissful life to come. Reuter, who spent eight years researching the book, moves from the broken survivors of the childrens' suicide brigades in the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, to the war-torn Lebanon of Hezbollah, to Israeli-occupied Palestinian land, and to regions as disparate as Sri Lanka, Chechnya, and Kurdistan. He tells a disturbing story of the modern globalization of suicide bombing--orchestrated, as his own investigations have helped to establish, by the shadowy Al Qaeda network and unintentionally enabled by wrong-headed policies of Western governments. In a final, hopeful chapter, Reuter points to today's postrevolutionary, post-Khomeini Iran, where a new social environment renounces the horrific practice in the very place where it was enthusiastically embraced just decades ago.

Book The Champagne Truckers

  • Author : Mick Twemlow
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2017-11-15
  • ISBN : 9781979247214
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book The Champagne Truckers written by Mick Twemlow and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author and owner driver Mick Twemlow's new book, "The Champagne Truckers", provides a further authentic, personal insight into a wide variety of previously unpublished incidents that occurred while he was living and working as a truck driver in Russia, from 1990 until 1995.From witnessing appalling acts of violence and the consequences of numerous fatal traffic accidents on the streets of Moscow, to his dangerously close involvement in the Moldovan civil war. How having the cab of his truck ransacked by petty criminals on the streets of Leningrad seriously affected the cargo movement that he was carrying out. He describes incidents at border crossings where in one he was threatened with excessive violence while at another a corrupt Russian custom officer attempted to loot valuable goods from his truck's cargo. He recounts in detail many humorous situations that he encountered during his time in Russia such as incidents that occurred while obtaining diesel for his truck - or his daughter's behaviour in McDonalds in Moscow - or when delivering a satellite dish to the All Soviet Television centre. He also describes the bizarre methods used by Russian and Ukrainian police officers when making breathalyser tests. On a much more serious note he describes an incident where he was forced to run his truck off of the road during a torrential rainstorm at night, so as to avoid crushing to death two young boys who were riding an unlit motor-cycle. The potential consequences of which were catastrophic.During those five years living in the Soviet capitol with his Russian wife Elena and their daughter Margarita he learned to speak fluent Russian. Therefore, able to communicate with the Russian people, that he came into contact with throughout the country, he built up a starkly graphic picture of how they lived and the problems that the end of the Soviet Union brought. This meant that he fully understood how life for the average person was in Russia during and following the death throes of the Soviet system. Having lived in Moscow from 1990 until 1995 he was uniquely placed to witness at first hand the transformation brought about by the end of communist rule and the severe hardship that it brought for many Russians.Beside his full description of what life in his truck was like on the road in Russia and the Ukraine, he also explains the social and highly toxic ecological circumstances that not only the Russian people, but all of the western truck drivers delivering to Russia encountered within the country during the early 1990s.
