Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to show that history really does repeat itself and highlight great issues of our times, this book captures the essence of certain trials that took place in the history of the United States and reminds us that many issues of old are still with us yet unresolved and subject to great continuing public interest. The author argues that public perceptions of guilt or innocence are often wrong and could have actually affected the results of famous trials. Celebrity murders, governmental manipulation, death penalty, and civil rights issues provide some of the backdrop for discussions. The guilt of famous accused ax murderess, Lizzi Borden, a white churchgoing maiden from New England is compared with the terrorists Sacco and Vanzetti. The murder of a child by other youths, Leopold and Loeb, creates a forum to discuss the death penalty as argued by famous trial lawyer Clarence Darrow. The death penalty as applied to minors was only recently decided by the US Supreme Court. The Civil Rights Movement, developed from the Scottsboro Boys trial and World War II, is analyzed. Military commissions and tribunals and the treatment of prisoners of war and enemy combatants are issues that arise out of the Nuremburg trial. Social and religious debates are dealt with in the Scopes Monkey trial. The right of choice developed in Roe vs. Wade, and the special college admission case of Bakke vs. the Regents of the University of California are all discussed. Finally, the impeachments and trials of Clinton and Johnson are compared. This review of the last one hundred years in the courts, wherein major issues, many still with us, is enlightening and thought provoking.

Trials of the Century: An Encyclopedia of Popular Culture and the Law examines some of the most important (and infamous) cases in American history, placing them in both historical and legal context. Book Private Diary of an O J Juror

Download or read book Private Diary of an O J Juror written by Michael Knox and published by Phoenix Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was originally published prior to the conclusion of the O.J. Simpson murder trial. At that time, California state law made it a crime for jurors and ex-jurors to be paid for writing about their service until 90 days after a trial had ended. That law was found to violate Michael Knox's First Amendment rights, clearing the way for his story to be made public before the trial had ended. Here, Knox reveals that while racial divisions existed on the panel, they were grossly exaggerated. He describes the oppressive, bizarre, and demeaning life of sequestration, where alcohol is prohibited and privacy is nonexistent...even during conjugal visits, jurors worried about having their conversation taped. Knox also explains why he was leaning towards a guilty verdict just prior to his dismissal as a juror.

Download or read book A Long Dark Night written by J. Michael Martinez and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a brief time following the end of the U.S. Civil War, American political leaders had an opportunity—slim, to be sure, but not beyond the realm of possibility—to remake society so that black Americans and other persons of color could enjoy equal opportunity in civil and political life. It was not to be. With each passing year after the war—and especially after Reconstruction ended during the 1870s—American society witnessed the evolution of a new white republic as national leaders abandoned the promise of Reconstruction and justified their racial biases based on political, economic, social, and religious values that supplanted the old North-South/slavery-abolitionist schism of the antebellum era. A Long Dark Night provides a sweeping history of this too often overlooked period of African American history that followed the collapse of Reconstruction—from the beginnings of legal segregation through the end of World War II. Michael J. Martinez argues that the 1880s ushered in the dark night of the American Negro—a night so dark and so long that the better part of a century would elapse before sunlight broke through. Combining both a “top down” perspective on crucial political issues and public policy decisions as well as a “bottom up” discussion of the lives of black and white Americans between the 1880s and the 1940s, A Long Dark Night will be of interest to all readers seeking to better understand this crucial era that continues to resonate throughout American life today.
