Book excerpt: Conceived in 1976 and published in 1980, LEGEND exemplifies the political and linguistic commitments of then-nascent Language writing. Coauthored by Bruce Andrews, Charles Bernstein, Ray DiPalma, Steve McCaffery, and Ron Silliman, the work was composed on typewriters and developed through the mail. The twenty-six poems in the volume bring together every possible permutation of collaborative authorship in one-, two-, three-, and five-author combinations, revealing the evolution of distinctive styles against and in conversation with others. Along with a complete reproduction of the original text, LEGEND: The Complete Facsimile in Context includes a critical introduction by editors Matthew Hofer and Michael Golston, a generous selection of material from the authors' correspondence, and a new collaborative piece by the authors. This book will be an essential resource to students and scholars in twentieth-century poetry and poetics.

Download or read book Textile Legend Unravels written by Dr. Rajaram Jaipuria and published by Jaipuria Publishing House. This book was released on with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of my life essentially focuses on how politics destroyed an assiduously built industrial empire; how I fought a long but unsuccessful legal battle for getting my textile mills back; and how I eventually succeeded in reinventing life in the very industry I always loved. The origin of the House of Jaipurias dates back to 1914, when my father, Seth Mungturamji Jaipuria, left our native town of Nawalgarh (in Rajasthan) to travel to Kolkata (earlier Calcutta), which was then India’s industrial and commercial hub, and had been its official capital till 1911. (Delhi then acquired that privilege.) I have tried to explain the evolution of the Jaipuria Group, as well as of the Indian textile industry, in as lucid a manner as I could. I hope the young entrepreneurs, as well as the students of management, apart from the public at large, would find my narrative educative and, if I may say so, inspiring. I hope this book would not only help the younger generation understand India’s industrial history and the roots of its own entrepreneurial abilities but would also inspire some of the few remaining entrepreneurs of my generation to record their life histories and share their rich experience, besides warning present and future governments about the dangers of unnecessary meddling in affairs of industry and trade.

Book excerpt: "Bix Beiderbecke is a figure of legend: the white cornetist's short life (1903-1931) fit the myth of the tragic artist, surrounded by the nostalgia of an era (Prohibition), and rooted in the dark history of jazz. Considered a genius by his fans and fellow musicians, Bix was a master cornet player, pianist, and composer, and one of the most inspiring jazz musicians of his age." "French jazz scholar Jean Pierre Lion traveled the trajectory of Bix's life, from birth to death, to boarding school, on tour, and beyond, to uncover the truth behind the legend. He creates historical ambience with descriptions of 1920s Chicago - ruled by Al Capone and peopled with fast cars, flappers, and hot jazz musicians - and Bix's personality is revealed through excerpts from the few letters he wrote in his lifetime and the memories of friends and witnesses of the jazz age." "When he died, Bix left behind a tremendous list of recordings (included here in a definitive discography) and several original compositions. This biography culls the entirety of Bix scholarship into one volume, painting a complete picture of the man, his music, and his times."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Burlesque West written by Becki Ross and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-07-25 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Second World War, Vancouver emerged as a hotbed of striptease talent. In Burlesque West, the first critical history of this notorious striptease scene, Becki Ross delves into the erotic entertainment industry at the northern end of the dancers' west coast tour - the North-South route from Los Angeles to Vancouver that provided rotating work for dancers and variety for club clientele. Drawing on extensive archival materials and fifty first-person accounts of former dancers, strip-club owners, booking agents, choreographers, and musicians, Ross reveals stories that are deeply flavoured with an era before "striptease fell from grace because the world stopped dreaming," in the words of ex-dancer Lindalee Tracey. Though jobs in this particular industry are often perceived as having little in common with other sorts of work, retired dancers' accounts resonate surprisingly with those of contemporary service workers, including perceptions of unionization and workplace benefits and hazards. Ross also traces the sanitization and subsequent integration of striptease style and neo-burlesque trends into mass culture, examining continuity and change to ultimately demonstrate that Vancouver's glitzy nightclub scene, often condemned as a quasi-legal strain of urban blight, in fact greased the economic engine of the post-war city. Provocative and challenging, Burlesque West combines the economic, the social, the sexual, and the personal, and is sure to intellectually tantalize.

Book The Last Waltz of The Band

Download or read book The Last Waltz of The Band written by Neil Minturn and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Vol. 2 of the series CMS Sourcebooks in American Music, Neil Minturn acknowledges the phenomenon of rock and roll with a serious examination of Martin Scorsese's film, THE LAST WALTZ (1978), the celebrated "rockumentary" that so artfully captured for posterity the final performance of The Band. From 1861 to 1976, this partnership of one American and four Canadians produced an impressive body of popular song in the rock idiom between 1961 and 1976. Joining its members for their farewell performance are a variety of guests, who, like The Band itself, reflected the rich array of traditions that have nourished rock and roll since its emergence. Minturn approaches the substance of the performances and the film itself in terms of intimacy and tradition. He presents the San Francisco concert as a summation of an extraordinary musical journey and prefaces his "scene-by-scene" analysis with a cogent introduction to documentary filmmaking. Selected performances are discussed in detail.
