Book Legendary Locals of Yarmouth

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Yarmouth written by John A. Basile and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With roots as deep as the earliest years of the American colonies, Yarmouth has a long and colorful history that is still being written. When Stephen Hopkins built his home with permission from the court of Plymouth Colony, Yarmouth was already home to native peoples. Bounded on its north and south sides by the Atlantic Ocean, it is no surprise that ship captains, salt makers, and merchants are part of the towns early history. Later, artists, writers, and educators also became part of the scene. The artist Edward Gorey chose Yarmouth for his home, as did astronaut Daniel Burbank. Jazzman Lou Colombo and town administrator Robert Lawton have also made their marks on the community. Yarmouths distinct neighborhoods are a source of pride, and historic preservation is a prime concern to many. The towns annual October gathering is called the Seaside Festival, to let one and all know that the people of Yarmouth are very much aware of their connection to the Atlantic.

Book Legendary Locals of Boston s South End

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Boston s South End written by Hope J. Shannon and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the South End's early years as an upper- and middle-class residential district to its time as an immigrant and rooming house neighborhood and then to its recent urban renewal, residents have shaped its legacy and its place within the city of Boston. Locals have worked in common to make the South End a safe and vibrant community for over two centuries. Notables such as architect Gridley J.F. Bryant, preservation advocate Arthur Howe, and pedestrian advocate Ann Hershfang contributed immensely to the built environment. Add to their ranks artists like Allan Rohan Crite and Kahlil Gibran, jazz club owner Joseph Walcott, longtime restaurateurs such as the Foley and Manjourides families, and bar owner and gay rights advocate Leo Motsis and a true picture of the South End's history and diversity begins to emerge.

Book Cape Cod Jazz From Colombo to The Columns

Download or read book Cape Cod Jazz From Colombo to The Columns written by John A. Basile and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first notes of jazz hit Cape Cod in the very early days of the genre. Bournehurst-on-the-Canal hosted top bands, and emerging swing era dancers packed the hall. Cape Cod's "First Lady of Jazz," Marie Marcus, was a child prodigy in Boston and found some of her most important instruction in the art of stride piano during lessons with great pianist Fats Waller in New York. At the very tip of the Cape, the Atlantic House in Provincetown showcased performances from some of the biggest names like Gerry Mulligan, Billie Holiday and Stan Getz. Author John Basile details the fascinating history and amazing musicians that made Cape Cod a music destination.

Book Legendary Locals of Androscoggin County

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Androscoggin County written by Maxwell Mogensen and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In as much as it has endowed the region with a rich heritage, plentiful stories, and a host of colorful characters, history has been kind to Androscoggin County. But history can also be dark and uncanny, as when Francis E. Stanley, a Lewiston resident and inventor of an early steam-powered vehicle, died in an automobile accident. It can be eerie, like when his twin brother opened an enormous hotel--now purportedly home to his ghost--that became the inspiration for Stephen King's novel The Shining. These twists of fate begin to unravel the tale of Androscoggin County's legendary locals. Some, like Benjamin Bates and Edward Little, are remembered for the institutions they helped create. Others raised the hopes and spirits of their neighbors, like Joey Gamache, who won two boxing world titles in the early 1990s. Still others are remembered for the subtler ways they affected change, like Rita Dube, who saved Lewiston's St. Mary's Church from demolition and helped create the Franco-American Heritage Center. Some notable residents ascended to the highest offices of government, others to national fame, but many are remembered for the significant ways they shaped their communities, and Androscoggin County, from within.
